These are my favourate animes for the last 20 odd years. Each one of these films is quite simply stunning. Ive enjoyed everyone of them. If we can make films like this (of course the scale would be phenomenally expensive) but stylistically and design, character wise, we could make some amazing films. Let me know if you want any of these movies before I go, but please, do yourself an favour and watch them. They are much more advanced films than you will see from Hollywood. Even James Cameron agrees!

Fist of the north star for the win....i recommend you look it up McBain if you have never seen it.

Cowboy Beebop, Akira, GITS, Ninja Scroll and Wicked City all kick ass.

Devilman is my all time favourite though. Oh, Guyver is quite good too.

Fist of the North Star?!!!

How could I forget that classic?!!

It hasnt come out on DVD here, and I havent seen it in yonks.

Top movie.

Not been in to Anime since I was 11. Used to like Vampire Hunter D though. I wrote a few tunes based on Akira a while ago, awesome idea for a film. Tetsuo ftw!

I got a collection of about 200 anime dvds. With the exception of Miziaki films (Mononoke, Kiki's, Howl's, Tortoro, Spirited Away) and Kon's films (Tokyo godfathers, millineum princess, perfect blue), the television series are far superior to the movies (especally avoid movies based off TV shows).

If you are lucky enough to live in the states all this stuff can be rented off netflix

Top 10

1. FLCL
2. Full Metal Alchemist (believe it or not the movie was actually good too)
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Blue Seed
5. .hack//Sign
6. The 12 Kingdoms (watch in subs)
7. Escaflowne TV Series
8. Excel Saga
9. Martian Successor Nadesico TV series
10. Crest/Banner of the Stars (avoid english version)

I watch most of my anime in subtitles however with the exception of #6 and #10 all these animes have excellent dubs. All Miziaki films need to be watched in subs also.

Other good ones: Inuyasha, Outlaw star, Boogiepop Phantom, Kare Kano (his and her circumstances), Evagelion, Nana, Robotech 1st season.

Here's a good site that you can watch fansubbed anime (fansubs are often better than licenced stuff) that hasn't been licenced for the west yet.

Yea Ghibli is cool. I haven't seen Howl's moving castle yet though: work, school, everton etc.

If you liked Ghost in the Shell, there's a decent anime out there called Serial Experiments Lain that's pretty similar. They also made a 2, 13 episode TV seasons of Ghost in the Shell in 04-05, they are decent (dub is lousy though). They've been out on DVD for a couple years now.

Akira is pretty good, but there is stuff out there that is 1000x better, its kind of a shame that's the only thing most people have seen.

Dubs belong hell to never come back, a piece of art should be presented as it was made, for language purposes subtitles are the least intrusive way of making the artwork more enjoyable for those who don't speak whatever language the work is in.

This works both ways, Action films dubbed in Japanese are so stupid, big black guys with weird Japanese accents.... it just loses any atmosphere straight away!

In short, dubs die, subs rule!

That's not necessarily the case. Some dubs, like Cowboy Bebop and Samuari Champloo, are far superior to the Japanese versions. However those two series were targeted for a western auidence. FLCL's dub is in my opinion a little better in English too. It depends on the quality of the VAs and translation.
