What's age got to do with it? I'm on about basic quality. Many of the little man's fans are saying he should play ahead of Barry, Gibson and Osman already.

My point is Barry Horne was many times better than Besic in his day - but you'd didn't get a fanboy following for old Mr Horne so why do we have one for Mo Besci?

I blame the parents.

Well considering a forum like this wasn't around in 1995 how would you know if he had a fanboy following or not? It's really impossible to compare player ability from different generation as the game was wildly different. Who's better; Messi or Maradona?

He shouldn't play ahead of Barry at the moment but would rather see him in the team over Gibson and Osman. When he got MotM against City etc. were you honestly sat at home watching it like "nah he's crap"?

Because when someone's opinion is so wrong, they need to be told. Besic has never ever played left wing for us, you literally just made that up. Besic was signed from the Hungarian division last season, was raw and poor on his first few appearances which is why it was completely understandable that he didn't start every game. He still made 20+ appearances.

Besic missed 11 games through injury after the Chelsea game, made the bench the next two and started the one after. Isn't that what you would expect? Easing him back into action. Same with start of season, got injured pre-season made the bench a couple of weeks, first start gets injured.

I would understand what youre saying if a) Barry hadn't been our best and most consistent midfielder all season and b) if Besic had been benched when 100% fit behind Barry.

He started on the left wing v Chelsea, if he hadn't have got injured who knows how many games he would have played there.

Over the last 18 months in my opinion Barry should have played far less games and Besic should have played far more (even accounting for his injuries).

I don't see how Barry's consistency is being measured. In my opinion Ross has been far more consistent in terms of his role as an attacking mid. Barry is playing holding mid, has he been doing that consistently well given our poor defensive record? (Not that he is solely to blame for that before you hysterically over exaggerate that one)

If you don't agree that's fine there is no point carrying on with this.

I don't rate Gareth Barry as good enough for where we want to be in the table and I think his limitations dictate selections around him to the detriment of the team. I've not seen any argument on here to make me change that view, but am always open to anyone wanting to convince me otherwise.

Exactly. my problem is with the internet. Dam stupid invention.

No I thought he was great against City. I was in raptures. One swallow though. We've all been there before with one hit wonders.

What if Besic is our very own Chesney Hawkes?

And instead of a prominent facial mole he has his brylcream as his defining feature?

Barry is the best player at the club at taking the ball off the defence and starting the play. He's a superb pivot and his positioning is excellent. He was poor last year due to playing two games a week. Our defensive woes are mainly down to Howard, inability to defend crosses and corners and generally lapses in concentration, teams do not often play through the middle of us.

I like Besic. He was fantastic in those games but you need a player like Barry in midfield alongside him.

Barry has like 40 for pace on FIFA LOL should be dropped.

Started there v Chelsea before having to come off for Naismith. If a player isn't fit he shouldn't be on the bench. Do you think Martinez selects Besic in the midfield pairing if both Barry and McCarthy are fit? Past behaviour would suggest not.

Starting 11 vs Chelsea at home:

Howard
Coleman Stones Jags Galloway
McCarthy Barry Besic
Barkley
Kone Lukaku
He was on the left of 3 CMs, not a left-winger. There is a difference.

Kone didn't play up top that day, he was on the RW. I was at the match, whatever the starting line up says, Besic was playing on the left flank before his injury.

As was I, Kone was tasked with tracking back on the right when we wer out of possession but if you watch whenever we were in possession he was right up top with Lukaku.

You reckon send him off to the Finnish League on loan?

So your entire complaint that Besic has been played out of position on the left wing is based on 9 chaotic opening minutes vs Chelsea (where he spent the most time in a similar position to Diego Costa) and how many times he played there in a parellel universe where he was fit????

Even for s brief window it was an insight into Martinez's thinking. At the end of last season he recognised he needed to rotate Barry. Here was his opportunity yet rather than dropping him or even resting him for a game Besic was shoehorned in the side. Cleverley had suffered a similar fate if McCarthy and Barry are fit even though his best football for us has been when played in the middle. Gibson has barely had a look despite making an impact when he comes on.

Even if Besic was the new Lothar Matthaus, as long as the McBarry axis are fit he's not getting in. I can't remember one premier league game where all three have been fit and Besic has started in his best position. Martinez has played all three but he's never dropped Barry or McCarthy if fit. A 35 year old is the first name on the team sheet for midfield and if McCarthy is fit he is the second and currently that seems beyond question no matter how good Besic is. For me given the variety of opposition I just don't see why Barry needs to play every game.
