I think we will have 2 ballplaying centre backs

Also Barkley to play at 8 and McCarthy at 6 (rotating with Besic).

Do you have a link to this?

I just ask cos in the past hes always implied that Besic would be the 1 to replace Barry, personally I think McCarthy should be Barrys replacement, Jamo should play the 6 and Besic the 8, with Ross at 10.

Besic(8) - Barks(10)

If Martinez wants to play 2 defensive midfielders, and Besic is injured...then who would you replace McCarthy and Barry with as a like for like replacement?

Besic was first choice last season when McCarthy was injured and was often man of the match. He was then dropped for no reason to accommodate a half fit McCarthy. We have lots of better options pushing for their place. Martinez has made the Barry and McCarthy roles seem vital only because he plays them every game. We came 12th last season and we are 9th now. Clearly no roles are 'vital' they just seem that way. You know as well as I do that Besic Gibson Cleverley Barkley could be as fit and in form as possible but are never getting a look in for either of the two midfield spots if McCarthy and Barry are even half fit.

This idea that none of the options are good enough is crazy considering that for large periods over the last 18 months one of Barry or McCarthy or both have been in poor form. We have international midfielders sitting on the bench. No excuse not to change it up. I could understand if we were top of the table but we're not we're midtable. No role is therefore vital.

When Jags retires though we'd likely have Mori,Stones,Galloway,Holgate...all of which are ball players.

Barkley i'm not 100% on but can see us getting in a player behind Lukaku which would move Barkley back + hasnt Martinez said he would be a number 8 ?

2 ball playing CBs isnt cool.

You need a beauty and a beast.

Barkley cant play number 8, hes lazy, cant tackle and doesnt have the engine.

I like this but I'd definitely - in the end - prefer McCarthy & Besic to swap. McCarthy has more "forward" experience than Besic who predominantly is a centre-half, and also Besic is miles better at dropping between the two centre backs to pick the ball up.

Maybe I was slightly harsh, Barks could play number 8, I just dont think personally he has the skillset to play it at a very high level, where as he has the tools to be a top drawer number 10.

When Jags retires, we wont have Stones, sorry, but I cant see it.

You see I see it the other way, watching Besic for Bosnia, Pranjic has been utter turd in a few games and Mume has been taking up the slack with regards the driving the ball forward.

Yeh I'm not saying he can do it but of the two to do what Barry does now and drop into the defence in either the centre or the full-backs, who would you rather have?

Whatever happens to Stones, Martinez is stockpiling ball playing centre backs...i reckon he's now finished with the defence.

I can see the next two windows a bit like this last one, i think he sorted our right wing...next he will sort out the left wing. Brought in Mori and i think next he will get in a keeper.

After next summer i think we will see some tinkering with centre midfield, Barry will be on his last legs with likely Barkley moving back, McCarthy and Besic competing and one of two of the younger lads we read about coming into the squad...

Ive always said that its a 5 year plan and i think we need 2 more summers for the players and then another season to really make some waves.

Edit: Barkley and Cleverley competing for one slot and Besic/McCarthy for the other.

Either really, both could do the job perfectly, I just think McCarthy suits it more, hes normally risk free, simple balls, Mume is more about the risks, the flair.

Most of the younger CBs are now ball playing CBs, the oldfashioned Jags type are mainly getting phased out.

Besic i think we will see come through in jan...

You said 2 ball playing centre backs wasnt cool...im just saying martinez is signing a few.

Even that one matty foulds i think the other week to sit behind mori and galloway...

Holgate and Foulds are gambles, hopefully they come off.

I really think theres no one to play behind lukaku other than barkley...so thats why hes not being moved back...hes seen osman and naismith there and realised its a disaster.

So hes got barkley there for now...

Later when barry starts to fall apart i think we will play besic and mccarthy together and barry on the bench....then he will have mccarthy and besic competing for one position and barkley and cleverley for the other....im sure that must be his logic and hes only playing kone and cleverley on the left till he sorts left wing next summer.

After gk and left wing he will get in the number 10 to.play behind lukaku..

LCB
Jags
Mori
Galloway
Foulds

RCB
Stones
Holgate
Browning
Pennington

Thats quite a lot of depth....i wonder how many we would actually keep. Lets say we managed to hold onto stones....how many would we have in the first team and how many would we need to sell...who would we sell...

Good problems to solve.
