I can't understand that, winning that game or losing it,had no bearing on where we would finish in the league.
The only thing it would determine was if we won,it would help the Shyte to win the league,I am a fanatical, avid evertonian, but I wanted us to get beat that day,an I was not on my own.
Obviously if winning would of given us 4th spot,I might of thought differently, maybe not though,I really cannot relate to you wanting us to win a nothing match, which would give them lot the title ????
Absolutely agree with that sentiment bro!

Are you denying we had a chance at 4th? Or that we had City on the ropes?

Utter madness.

Did you cheer the City goals in?

Each to their own but I have a very vivid memory of everyone around me screaming their head off for Everton and at the same.time.screaming at Dzeko.
No chance of finishing. Go back and look at league. Only thing is winning would have helped RS win league. If it were a case of getting into CL, of course I would have cared, but that game was a dead rubber as I recall.

It wasn't a 'dead rubber' at all. Our chances of 4th were slim, and with hindsight, we couldn't have got it anyway, but it was definitely mathematically possible for us going into the citeh game.

IIRC arsenal were at home vs west brom the day afterwards. Can you imagine beating city and then 24 horus later knowing we couldn't finish higher than 5th even if the last day went perfectly to plan?

We finished 7 points behind arsenal. We had to win all of crystal palace, southampton and man city. We lost all 3 of them.

It was still mathematically possible for us to get 4th going into the citeh game. I've not even googled it, but I can remember clear as day being in 'the wanting us to win' crowd (yes, a shocking statement, err.....) because it was mathematically possible for us to do so.

I never argued it to the lengths that @dholliday did, but I wanted us to win.

We are talking about what people wanted at the time without the benefit of hindsight, aren't we?

It seems so stupid to be talking about this 2 years afetrwards as if it still matters but I have rarely been more annyoed with fellow fans than I was with the way people were insisting that that game mattered. Insisting with all their hearts that it was vital to everton to win because if it didn't we'd finish 7th and miss out in europe.

When it was blatantly obvious that neither spurs or utd could catch us and it was also blatantly obvious that we couldn't catch arsenal as they'd have to fail to beat both norwich and west brom. It just wasn't a game that mattered but people were insistent on the narative that it was the biggest game we'd played since the fa cup final.

The vast majority of people rightly recognised that we needed to beat palace and southampton and we'd blown it before the city game kicked off.

Agree to an extent, and I could see both sides of the argument. That's why I never imposed myself in the debate in quite the manner that @dholliday did.

It was highly unlikely that Arsenal would lose them 2 games. However, it was only 2 games. If we'd needed them to lose 6 games on the bounce, then I probably would have been in the 'throw the game' crowd.

God those last 5 games were heartbreaking though.

When we thrashed them at our place to go 2 points ahead of them with 5 games to go, I honestly thought we had it. And to finish a whole 7 points behind, to lose 3 out of 5 games. Against palace at home and then against southampton by scoring 2 own goals while arsenal knocked out 5 wins on the trott.

Goddamn it, I mean it's a squad game, we were knackered and down to our last legs while arsenal had the spare men and the guts and balls to see it out. But I really thought we had it.
