Theres been a lot of blame on Howard for stuff thats just not his fault. A few years ago people were wanting him dropped after he did not save a penalty in one particular match, this was around the same time that some of you were questioning, looking for someone to blame, amongst the clubs physio's due to us having a lot of injuries. Then Howard saved a few in a certain FA cup Semi and its not been mentioned since.
To quote a top flight premiership keeper in a recent interview, “Goalkeeping criticism is 90 per cent nonsense.”
I dont know if its a joke, but some people have said about replacing him with Tim Krul at Newcastle! Kruls a great keeper, but not in Howards class. Kruls second choice behind Steve Harper, who is injured at the moment, at Newcastle. But before that he was third choice and could never break into the squad. Given and Harper are hardly the greatest keepers in the league.
On the subject of commanding his area, he is actually one of the best at it. It is an accusation leveled at alot of keepers but is far from true. Then the subject of crosses, he does not come for many, but you can bet your bottom dollar that he comes for just as much as any premiership keeper. Certainly more than Given has ever done.
