Daily Star: Simply The Best 7 Days A Week :: Football :: David Moyes would welcome Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan to Everton

EVERTON boss David Moyes would love to roll out the welcome mat for Atletico Madrid ace Diego Forlan.

#bodycopy a { font-size: 12px; } The Uruguayan striker, who spent two years at Manchester United, is desperate to return to the Premier League.

Forlan, 30, scored just 17 times in his 95 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. But he is grabbing goals for fun in Spain, catching the attention of Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga and English sides Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

No one has yet reached for the chequebook to sign away Atletico’s £31million asking price, much to Forlan’s frustration.

Everton, though, would be happy to arrange a loan deal to grant Forlan his wish of a return to England.

Boss David Moyes said: “If he was interested I would give him a home here but I have said that the players we bring in will probably be on a loan basis.”

A player of Forlan’s unquestioned ability would further strengthen a squad soon to be boosted by the comebacks of Phil Jagielka, Phil Neville, Leon Osman, Mikel Arteta and Victor Anichebe.

The Goodison boss said: “What’s it going to be like when we get them all back? It’s actually better than new signings in January because they already know Everton FC.

“We have been playing with one hand tied behind our back with what we have got and so we hope to make some more additions as well in January.

“The priority now is to try and get as far up the Premier League as we can. I hope by the end of the season we go on a really good run. That’s still feasible. It’s been our style that when we are down we become more dangerous.”

Moyes’ ambitions are put to the test today with the visit of a Tottenham side confident about finally breaking into the top four.

So the Everton chief is under no illusions about the battle on his hands as he patches his side together for combat.

Moyes said: “They are an exciting side. They have a team which can be a success in cups and in the league because of the size of their squad.”

Love our transfer policy.

£32m? Pffft. Loan please.

Why look at Strikers? We clearly need midfeilders and another centre half - especially with Joey hitting the ACON in the new year.

Things dont bode well for the Yak IMO, if Moyesy is looking at strikers.

Disagree Neiler, I think a striker is a priority.

As good as Yakubu is, he doesn't fit our style. Even if he does, can we rely on Sahas fitness?

After Saha, theres Jo - who is more than likely to be going back to Man City in the summer.

We're limited up front right now.

Not for me mate, i think the Yak is the perfect player for our system he is strong, can hold the ball up, lay it of, he has imense technical ability, he can take players on and has great vision - admittedly he has struggled since his injury, but i still beleive he has an imprtant role to play in the new year - hes a 20 goal a season striker reaching fitness. Id have him in the team over Louis to be honest as he offers more overall - but you cant argue with goals and quality finishing.

I dont see Jo as a long term solution hes a squad filler at the mo - i dont think we can currently afford to give him the pateince his potential deserves.

Call me mad but i still have faith in young Vaughan - if he can stay fit i think hes a special player. Dare i mention big Vic and i also expect Baxter to end up eventually in the hole - maybe taking Jo's spot.

Then of course there is super Tim Cahill - who i would underestamate at your peril!

The problem is in terms of creating chances for me with Arteta, Billy, Ossie and Pienarr all missing for huge chunks up untill now, we are not a threat centrally and this needs to be adressed before we look at another forward i.e. somone who is creative and can create something centrally from midfeild for our strikers (cover for Arteta). For me our strikers deficencies so far this season have been the result of one dimenionsal delivery from predictable cross after cross, or long hoof.

Another striker would be great but i think the midfeild and another centre half are priorites - we have shipped far to many goals this season and teams are creating to many chances against us. These are more of a priority for me, in terms of balance, options and varience of our overall style of play and creating chances - at the moment we are to predictable.

We have Saha and Yakubu, this story is pie in the sky, but Forlan would fight them both harder than Jo would.

And I agree with Heat, Vaughan and Vic are finished, both missed huge chunks of the most important years of their careers, both will be playing catch up forever now.

Saha, Yakubu, Jo and Cahill can all play upfront, we are fine in that area at this moment in time. Yakubu is perfect for us, and will be our long term striker in my opinion.

Victor Anichebe will be a backup wide player for us, a quite a useful one. Sadly, I think James Vaughan will move on.
