David Moyes has refused to criticise Phil Neville's reaction to being substituted in the Merseyside derby.

The Everton skipper was less than amused when he was withdrawn with 18 minutes of the 1-0 defeat at Anfield still remaining, and made his feelings known as he left the field.

He first snatched a tracksuit top off a member of the Toffees coaching staff, before marching furiously away to take his seat in the stand.

However, he did take the time to shake hands with his manager on his way past, and Moyes feels that his captain was just venting his frustration on a difficult day all round for the blue half of the city.

Attitude

"Neville's withdrawal was tactical, he wasn't injured," said the Scot.

"He was just disappointed with the way the game had gone, and he showed it.

"I have no problem with that attitude.

"He was fine with me and just upset with the way the game had gone. I understand that, he shook my hand and I have no problem with him being upset about things."

Neville should be ashamed, as a 'model professional' and club captain he shouldn't be making Moyes have to defend any of his actions.

Also interesting to see Moyes not having a problem with that attitude. Remember Blomquist kicked a lucozade bottle when he was subbed of? - Moyes sure as hell had a problem then.

I said this in another thread but it seems more relevant here;

It didnt undermine anything he was being hurled with vile, vitriolic abuse from all angles and when removed from the field, no-one wanted to take the Captain's armband from him. In a game of such passion he was one of the few in blue that really cared, so one wonders what strange world you must live in to twist that back on him. ridiculous.

I've got no problem with his attitude. I think it's clear how much the club means to him and he always gives 100%

Say what you like about his playing ability, but his attitude for me is spot on

I'm a tad disappointed by the gaffers reaction as well, doesn't send a strong message to the rest of the squad. I would love to know what was said to Nevile by the team later and by Moyes behind doors, it can't have been who was a naughty boy them surely

Like someone so eloqently stated earlier.

If that had been Fernandes reacting to being subbed like that....

Danny you have to remember Neville was agreat PR move for Davey and it made Everton a now team with more of a identity with a International on the books from the reveried Sir Alex and the United lot. Now the Honeymoon is over with the signing Everton have gained merit by its own right in the media eyes. I think Neville looks out of sorts playing midfield and I'll leave it at that. I don't mean to say he isn't a true blue at the moment he just lacks good judgement in his passing and putting teamates under pressure when he should explore other avenues. I haven't really been 100% sold on him from the start so hes had to do great things for me to be in his camp.

Davey won't put up with bad behaviour. I wonder that he may ride the pine for the first half this week.

I'd be wary comparing Neville's reaction to that of someone like Fernandes. If the latter was to be subbed off it would likely be because he simply didn't show up and was making no effort. Neville can't be accused of that. He wanted to be on the pitch like a captain should be, and he was angry that we'd played poorly in an important game. Good for him. It's a shame he can't pass a ball.

Oh I agree with you as I understand why Neville was being subbed.

I was commenting more on how people have their favorites.

If they were both subbed for the same reasons, all other reasons being equal, Neville would have had much easier time of it with the supporters than Fernandes.

That's all I was implying.

By the way, welcome to the forum Caught. (y)

Ah, well yes. No argument there.

And cheers.

If you use that in his defense, it asks the question, should he be captain if he can't handle it?
