Morgan Schneiderlin regrets basing his decision to join Everton around then-manager Ronald Koeman.

The French midfielder joined the Blues from Manchester United in January 2017 for £20m to link up with Koeman who was his boss at Southampton.

Koeman would be sacked by October of that year and Schneiderlin, after a really impressive first few months at Goodison, Schneiderlin was unable to recapture that form.

Everton sold the 30-year-old to Nice earlier this summer for around £2m and he has reportedly told French outlet L'Equipe that making the switch from Old Trafford, just because of Koeman, is not a decision he would ever take again.

“I’m not going to talk about mistakes, but when I left Manchester United, I did it for one person, Ronald Koeman”, Schneiderlin is quoted as saying.

“I had six good months and he was sacked.

“There were a lot of changes in management, which is not ideal.

“It taught me not just to make a choice based on the coach, even if they play a big role.”

Schneiderlin returned home to France but said his intention was to stay in England, where he has played since 2008.

"My primary goal was not to leave England. I listened to everything, English, Spanish or Italian clubs," he is quoted as saying.

“The Nice project touched me as soon as I spoke with Julien Fournier [the director of football] and Patrick Vieira.

“I thought it was fantastic.

“It was strictly a sporting choice."
