More excuses, some positives

Another disappointment last night. To be honest, I don't feel as gutted as I thought I would. It was always going be to difficult and who knows, just one goal more for in the 90 minutes may well have seen us through. At least we weren't thrashed, which is a crumb of comfort.

When reading Moyes on the official site two things struck me. First, he vows to get things back together and he says his future is at Everton. To me that is a clear sign that he wants to put all this crap behind him and get us back to the team we were last season. That appears to be fighting talk. Let's hope he still feels that way in the coming months.

Second thing is he's still offering lame excuses for another poor performance. This time, as he can't blame it on the difference in the cost of the team, he's making much of the referees decision not to send off Steven Dafour, which, he claims, is a big factor in how things panned out. He goes onto say that he feels let down by that.

My view is that we lost for this simple reason: the better team was Liege, over both legs. Simple as that. If we'd played Liege off the park, yet still lost, then I'm happy to hear about poor refereeing decisions. But when we deservedly lose because of a poor performance by the team and management, I want to know that everything will be done to ensure such events are kept to a minimum.

Still, I know Moyes can pull things back together again. It's not too late for him and the season isn't over yet. We've still got a European place to fight for, which should be our priority. There is also the FA cup to follow. A good run in that would make us all feel optimistic again.

And Kenwright and Moyes, please sort that sodding contract out now.

After getting over last night I can say if the lads pick themselves up and smash the barcodes on Sunday, then get a draw at either Manure or Gooners, we'll be stronger and we'll be okay.

I'm glad Moyes said he wants to stay and fight. He needs a clear head and vision of what he wants the team to do this season. I think having a full strength side and the new lads bedding in should work well now and Moyes will make it work.

Liege are a very good side. Like I've said, seeing the other EPL sides last night they all would've been spanked more so than we did over the two legs. We held our own and didnt roll over which show character -- like we did away at Hull.

Looking back on it, the Carling Cup exit is probably going to hurt us more than anything else this season. We could've gone all the way in it based on last years form.

Pressure off lads, time to pick up and move on up.

Good post.

Just heard an interview with Pip on Radio City 5 minutes ago in which he pretty much put the defeat down to "poor refereeing"... this on the back of Moyes's comments regarding the same thing.

FFS, why cant we just admit that we were poor and simply not good enough?! Does my head in!!

I agree that he shouldn't have been on the pitch, which obviously would have made a big difference to the way the game played out.

However, we were clueless in the final third and Liege had thier tactics spot on. They deserved it more then us :(

Does concern me the amount of excuses. Its getting a bit pathetic really.

The ref didn't make any difference. I thought he had a good game to be fair.

At the end of the day, we didnt create a single chance during the entire game. We got lucky with a poxy goal and still didnt take any initiative.

I found Moyes, and now Neville's comments embarrasing.

I agree, excuses are embarrasing just now. I've been fed up all morning thinking that the season is over. It's not. I've supported this club for almost 50 years and have seen worse. Kenada Blue's comment that the pressure is off made me think of the times we have bounced back from a low in the past.

The season so far can be written off as an extended pre season. Last night may be the kick up the backside the team and it's manager deserve. We can start our season against the barcodes by giving them a good thumping.

Come on you blues(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)

Like your positivity!

I support the comments above though about the sounbites coming from the club. The ref had a good game all in all - and we can't seriously expect that Defour should have got a 2nd booking or a penalty should have been given. Other than that the ref was ok so we do need a kick up the arse and I sincerely hope this was it,
