They also deliberately climb to incredible altitudes, looking for thermals to latch onto, as once they go to sleep they continue to " glide " downwards during their sleep.

During the Great War, a French pilot flying over the front line reported the following:

"As we came down to about 10,000 feet in a full moon, we suddenly found ourselves in a strange flight of birds which seemed to be motionless, We were soon in the middle of the flock and the following day I found one in the machine. It was a swift."

A real ‘air’ bird. Possibly my favourite of all.
