I caught an old QI last night and Mr Fry said there are about four times more words in English than there are French. Now considering they have so many doubles for masculine and feminine erm, 'things', that sure is some going.

Many versions of English are spoken round the world, more than French I would think?
Then there are those that use it as a common 2nd language

8 time out of 10 it is the English version that is as short or shorter than the others.
Monstrously discriptionaly verbal but at the same time - when required - concise.
