Absolutely this, and then the traffic clears so you cross before the lights change, only for the lights to change as you reach the other side, then a car pulls to a stop as the lights are on red. Making me feel mean that I forced them to stop for no reason.

Agreed, that said though, annoys me when people just walk up press it when they could just cross. Couple of minutes later they're well on their way and some poor sods sat at an empty crossing on a red light.

Some countries have sensors in the footpath and lamppost which knows if there is nobody waiting.
Its not very complicated technology.

There's one just by me where it can get really busy when I'm waiting to cross, so I press the button, but after about three minutes the cars clear off and the lights change

They should either change when I press the button or shouldn't change when I've already crossed the road.
