Umbrella companies

I appreciate that if you are earning an absolute fortune that an umbrella company is useful, however, when you're only earning £8.21 an hour, and are essentially taxed twice, they're reprehensible,especially if they're being used by local authorities.

Just this week I have found myself down £50.00 - I've started to pay income tax as well as 'employers' tax. I've also been auto-enrolled into the pension scheme making this week and the forthcoming weeks extremely difficult until I can opt out and claim my pension contributions back. The refund will no doubt be taxed as well.

You should have been allowed to opt out at the same time you were auto enrolled, unless the rules have changed. Just tell pay roll tomorrow you missed the paperwork, and they should cancel it for you. Saves them cash as well.
