When we chat about players one thing that all football supporters do is exaggerate the failings of players , just as we sometimes overplay their strengths. It’s human nature it adds spice to our debates.
We caricaturise the strengths and especially the failings of our players to add emphasis to our post match critique, to draw attention to what we perceive as the failings of our team.
Sometimes we do it just to release our frustration, to apportion blame.
The problem becomes when the caricature begins to obscure the actual performance of the player, we look for the actions that support that cartoon image and ignore the good points.
Keane has been a recipient of that caricaturisation over the years , he isn’t a great centre back for sure , but he is a decent PL one .
Tarkowski is highly regarded, yet yesterday I watched him freeze in the box , then place a perfectly weighted pass to the oncoming Brighton player that only the brilliance of Pickford prevented a certain goal. If Keane had conceded as many recent penalties as Tarks , we would have been posting multiple comments illustrating how rubbish he is.
The truth is more nuanced,
Tarkowski is a good not great CB and Keane is a decent not poor one.
They both make occasional mistakes , like all footballers and could almost certainly be improved on.
But where’s the laughs in that ?
