I really don't think people are saying it's unlikely that he'll ever have to play. What they mean when they say he's 4th choice isn't that he'll never step on the pitch it's that you're not going to (and don't need to) bring somebody in who's loads better to fulfil that role. If you put aside all the hysteria then he just isn't really a worse player than James Hill, Ben Mee, Jorge Cuenca, Willy Boly etc who had that role for the sides finishing in the sort of positions we're realistically aiming for this season. He's a bit crap, but midtable sides have crap players as their back up options, it's as simple as that really. Nobody wants that to be the case, it just is.
Like I said, we’ll see, the proof will be in what transpires. If hardly plays then no problem, if he does play regularly then the league campaign will suffer.
In the 22/23 season he started as effectively 6th choice. Lampard recognised the problem form the previous season and bought in a number of players to start ahead of him in his back 3 formation. Mina,
Tarkowski, Godfrey were his starting line up and then he preferred Coady and Holgate before you got to Keane. First game of the season v Chelsea Godfrey does his leg, Mina and Holgate both get long term injuries and lo and behold Keane is back in the starting 11. Lampard was out the door by January.
Dyche finished 23/24 with the 4th best defence in the league. One injury to
Branthwaite and we start with 4 losses despite leading 2-0 in 2 of the games. Keane put on a disaster class for the ages that took us a long time to recover from and arguably cost Dyche the opportunity to run out his contract.
