2024/25 Michael Keane

Two wasn't it? Anyway, he is perfectly good when we don't play a high line and as a squad player for the next twelve months then why not?
He had a poor game when he came on against Ipswich but hadn’t played for months but did played well in the last 2 games. As 4th choice I think it makes sense to give him another year when we need reinforcements in most other areas

Unbelievable...all of you.
It's just realism. I'd love him to disappear and us go and sign someone great to replace him but the reality is that we would be very likely to just sign someone who is at best as good as he is and so be absolutely no better off. There's an almost childish obsession from some people with him being the absolute worst player in the world when he's actually just a pretty standard PL squad player.

The childish obsession comes from us watching him for the last eight years.

I would understand it if on a new deal say similar to gana on less money. For me like most players we have had the aim has to be to get better players into thr club. I would like if we could do that this season but money may stop us from doing it.

If it wasn't already clear, it should be crystal clear now that he'll ultimately end up staying on a reduced terms contract. They're obviously just tying up loose ends before announcing it.
To be fair Holgate’s not been announced either as leaving but i doubt Holgate. If he stays he’s 4th choice. At 31 surely he’ll go to play first team football as will have to take huge wage drop

I think we can take it as a given that he would be on less money if he stayed. In an ideal world you're always improving in every position but realistically I just don't see how we would do that this summer with everything else we need to do and with the position the club is currently in. We have 3 centre halves that we would expect to be using up the vast majority of minutes and basically just need a 4th option for emergencies. If Keane goes and we sign Johnny Evans or Ben Mee or Craig Dawson to replace him then fine, I certainly won't shed any tears over it but it seems like some people will get an almighty shock when they actually see these fellas play and realise they aren't any better than he is.

Hiya mate. If I could go into the squad with a fully loaded uzi and happily get rid of anyone who I deemed not good enough and then replace them with whoever I wanted, I would and Keane would be one of the fellas getting uzi'd.

But I can't, I live in the real world, we cannot replace an entire squad in one window. Keane would be our 4th choice centr-half. It wouldn't be anywhere near as egregious as say re-signing Calvert-Lewin and hanging your hat on him to start games next season.

He was downright awful between 2021- up to start of this season so people are justifiable in those opinions.

This season when the team started picking up points he actually did o.k and Tarks looked worse. Than Branthy returns as ever whoever is alongside him looks good.

Don't really want to keep him though as to me it delays the urgent regeneration of the first 11. Surely J O'B showed on the final day he can have a good run at CB next season? He's done a good job at RB obviously but I'd prefer him to get more games ahead of Tarks next season centrally and then find a good RB to develop.

Then you release Keane and get in a younger CB to develop as J O'B eventually did this year.

Guess Moyes is just thinking keep as much of the defensive unit around as possible but I think the issue there is when injuries hit and Keane has to start ten in a row.

He didn't do too badly last season but the issue is he makes those around him worse.

They used to call Stuart Barlow "Jigsaw" because he used to fall to pieces in the box. The problem with Keane is he falls to pieces in his own box.

Madness if he is extended, a classic case of the recruitment people throwing their hands up. This will reflect very poorly on the manager if it happens. And when Keane inevitably proves his detractors right, Moyes will not escape unscathed.

I think they have the same amount of red cards too . I’m pretty sure Barlow got sent off once .

Said it in the Summer thread but as a 4th choice it's fine. Not many of us like him but we can't fix all our problems in one window and unless Branthwaite leaves, CB is one of the positions where we don't need to prioritise until next summer.

If he wants to stay, I’d keep him personally. He’ll take a wage cut and won’t demand to start every game - when he does, he’s an able deputy and a top pro.

Excellent agree. Reckon Keane could surprise everyone and improve dramatically under Moyes to the top defender everyone thought he'd be when he started out as a youngster at Man United.
