Average at best, but so is the rest of the defence bar Digne,no dominant figures there, complete lack of communication, lack of awareness and generally the centre halves play like they are drunk tackling each other, running into each other and challenging for the same balls,he only looked decent after looking so bad last season

Defending is a lot about awareness like you say and anticipating, positioning. Keane has none of this thiis. The first goal is shocking, he has plenty of time to see the pass and should be goal side. And should be overpowering peryez, giving him nowhere to go.

The amount of times you see him looking bewildered or looking around to see were the ball is is amazing, its the fact that whoever is playing centre half, becomes mute, add in the fact that none of them seem aggresive or dominant either in the air or on the ground and its a recipe for leaking goals

To be fair, as soon as we go to a three at the back, the entire defence just falls apart like they haven't played that role before.

They have no leadership or organisation skills.

Prior to that he and Zouma did fine, our problem is that Rafael swapped the system and instead of flooding the midfield and stopping the ball being play into the box, we created chaos at the back and allowed Newcastle back into the game.

Look at the 2nd goal, granted Pickford should just tip it over, but look at the space in front of the defence and time he had to shoot.

On the 3rd, despite it being offside, no one knows their jobs picking up.

Keane did fine until Mina came on and it's the system not the players in this case but we lack communication and leadership at the back.

We desperately need a dominant , intelligent centre back to command our defence.
At present Jagielka ,even in his dotage, remains closest to our requirements.
This is ,for me, the most important position Silva and Brands must attend to this summer.

And people try to make out he’s been one of our best players this season. He’s been dreadful and Burnley totally ripped us off. I’d actually have kept RFM instead of this clown and he really wasn’t very good.
