Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Morning Campers. Another beautiful day down here. Might take a walk down to one of the beaches then back home for a barbie.

Hopefully we'll have a confirmed signing or 2 today. Seems to be quite a few rumours going around about a much needed striker too. But I was in the Mina thread earlier. I love the guy but am as frustrated as anyone at his persistent injury problems, especially as he is such a good footballer, personality and leader. But I just couldn't believe the vitriol and hate being displayed in there. Similar stuff going on in the Keane, Gomes and Davies threads too. Just makes me incredibly sad
I don't understand any vitriol or tribalism in football. It's a game ! Yes we are deeply invested on an emotional level but that's it. People need to get a grip . Shankly may well have been a great manager but he was a pretty poor philosopher.

It really annoys me when we are linked with a player ......."he's crap " , no he isn't. Nno professional footballer is crap . Even in the lower leagues they have a skill and technique level none of us could match.

However a player may not be of the standard that we wanted if say we aspire to make top 6 ( fanciful I know ), but that's a different matter.

On Mina , I get the frustration - good player but he just can't stay fit. This is compounded ( sorry Sass) when he turns out for Colombia when he's been unable to play for Everton. Exactly the same could be said of Coleman in the past.

Yes we need a striker. I'm not set on 5 at the back but Frank likes it so need to get used to it. If he goes that way I hope he plays 532 to prevent us being overrun in midfield.

Just been for an early morning session in the gym. Going to be a busy week - got decorators in painting the outside of the house and doing the dining room. Happy days!

I agree so much about Mina. I also agree about the hate and vitriol being spewed about him and the others mentioned. I love Everton but would never behave like that. And it does affect players. It affects anybody. I wonder how those posters would feel if an angry mob followed them round in work and made similar comments about their performance. I follow another Everton page on Facebook and they are just as bad. One was calling for Lampard's head after the Chelsea game. Fortunately some of the more rational followers called him out on it.

Do you think it's because they are ;
a. lower than average intelligence and
b. have nothing else going on in their lives ?

Jeez that sounds patronising - sorry.

I agree with you and others about the negative posts and the over the top criticism of players, which seems to bound on hatred at times.
A quick look at other teams forums shows that it is not just Evertonians.
In fact Twitter/Facebook and the like show that it's not just football. Political forums can be as bad if not worse.
The internet is a fantastic invention, but the anonymity it affords does bring out the worst in people.
Of course very few of these posters are as vitriolic in real life.

Anyway, Happy Monday lol

A couple of years ago I was hounded “ literally “ blasted for days and in the case of one of our GOT well known …. Currently banned …for a couple of years after … for asking people not to be so vile about Tom Cleverly … there was a comedy thread about him and it was a tirade of personal attacks about him some of which were in my opinion way over the mark
It’s no wonder footballers have mental health issues

If I had to choose I would say b) I think there is a mindset that if your team does well then the glory reflects on you in some way. It makes you successful by association.

I totally agree with you. The anonymity of the Internet can be a very bad thing. Keyboard warriors all of them.

Are you watching the table tennis Jazz. Or is it something you prefer to play than watch?

Absolutely. Great stuff. I probably watch and write reports on more than I play.
Achanta the Indian player is remarkable at 40.
Pitchford is very much a confidence player.
He should win this but probably won't. His form pre covid was sensational and good enough to get him into the top 10 in the World. His ranking has now dropped to 20.
I can play all the shots that you see from these two but I'm about 30 minutes too slow.

Funny story Fred. I once played Desmond Douglas , former European Champion in a tournament. We played up to 21 in those days. I lost 21/2 , 21/3 and 3 of the points I won were lucky nets or edges.

At my level I could knock ( practise ) with them but as soon as the game started and it really mattered I had no chance!

I think Desmond Douglas and Chester Barnes are the only 2 table tennis players I've ever heard of. lol

On a different note we've just booked our cruise. Flying out to Valletta on September 1st with one week around Italy and the second week around the Greek Islands. No single supplement payable and only £300 extra for a balcony cabin, so very happy with that. Just over 3 weeks away so it will be on us before we know it.

Sounds absolutely fantastic. I hope you have a great time. Who are you going with ? ( please don't say your neighbours ) . Sounds like P&O from Valetta but I thought you had binned them off.

P)layed Chester Barnes too , actually took a game off him but he was pretty ancient at the time. Very strnge and interesting character.

Yes. The neighbours.

And yes it is P&O too. I hadn't binned them off as such. I was just a bit hacked off that they went back on their original decision about a full refund on the cruise I had booked, but they reversed that decision without me actually having to get involved. It's a great deal for single occupancy in fairness.
