Historically Cornwall has a cultural history as a Celtic nation alongside Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man and Brittany.

It was an independent kingdom until Anglo Saxon times but it's distinct territorial identity has remained - first as an earldom then as a Duchy which it remains today, meaning Cornwall is not (and has never been) a County of England.

A lot of its identity as distinct from England comes from how rural and remote it is and, as well as its rich mineral resources which meant it had an export economy of materials and skills independent of agriculture. Westminster even tried to curtail its economic power in the tin boom by levying higher taxation on Cornish tin than that from neighbouring Devon.

It has its own language & flag and its distinct identity is recognised in lots of ways - some are more ceremonial but some are legislative such as the devolution of powers and recognition of the Cornish people under the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.

These might not affect most people in their daily lives, however, if you die in Cornwall without a legal will technically your possessions pass to the Duchy of Cornwall (Prince William) rather than next of kin as in England. The same is true of company assets for a dissolved company registered in Cornwall. While this might seem archaic and like one of those 'pub facts' about weird laws it really happens and in 2020 King (then Prince) Charles collected £1m from deceased people in Cornwall.

The push for legislative independence is largely seen as a fringe movement and often referred to with irony or as a punch line, however, Cornwall's distinct cultural identity is widely recognised - as is the effect of the current meshed legislative approach where Cornwall is treated simultaneously as separate and distinct depending on the issue at hand.

And don't even start on the Isles of Scilly...

I did in fact read anothe passage that said it has never legally been admitted to England . I will retrace my steps.
Haha. Don't believe everything you read on Reddit Blue. Or indeed stuff perceived to come from a reliable source. This Weatherhill character is clearly a Cornish separatist, and whilst I'm not disputing much of what he says, he is making a conclusion based on a few facts whilst totally ignoring many other facts that would point to a rather different conclusion. He even discounts the views of all the other nameless (but countless) historians who disagree with him and questions their integrity. His main argument that it is not part of England is that Cornwall is a Duchy. Now being a lover of both Cornwall and history in general, I happen to know that the Duchy was set up by one of the early Norman Kings of England to give his son and heir, The Black Prince Edward, an income so he could wage war against the French. A worthy cause you'll agree. So before then Cornwall must have been part of his Kingdom as how else would he be able to bequeath it to his son. The title of Duke of Cornwall is passed onto the heir to the throne but the Duchy itself does not relate to the county of Cornwall. It is a private trust and although it does own some land in Cornwall, including the Isles of Scilly, most of it's assets are actually outside of the county. So. apart from the title. the Duchy of Cornwall bears little resemblance to what it once was. And apart from little weird anomalies like intestacy laws, Cornwall is just the same as any other English county.

And no doubt our resident legal experts will correct me if I'm wrong, but our friend from Reddit was not entirely accurate with his comments on Intestacy laws. It's a long time since I passed my law exams but my understanding is that if you die without making a will. Intestacy rules come into force which will determine who receives what. It's only if no next of kin can be found that the estate will revert to the Duchy if you lived in Cornwall. And the previous Duke always ensured that such receipts were always donated to charity. If you lived outside Cornwall, then if no beneficiary can be found the estate passes to The Crown (Govt coffers) never to be seen again . Unless you happen to live within the jurisdiction of the Duchy of Lancaster in which case the estate will go to the Kings private income. That should be of comfort to the good citizens of the Republic of Liverpool.

Anyway. Lovely part of the world Falmouth. I hope the house hunters found what they were looking for.

As a kid growing up just over the border I have pretty vivid memories of Mebyon Kernow which as Fred will know is Cornish for The Party of Cornwall.

My mum was Cornish so I took particular interest in Cornish affairs.

They were absolutely sincere about their wish to see Cornwall as an independent country ( ludicrous as that sounds ) but were never as militant as say The Sons of Glendower although I do remember some holiday homes being damaged and even us Janners were regarded as emmets ( an offensive term for holiday makers - in Devon we called them grockles).

The national party only came into existence with the help of Daphne DuMaurier in the 50s so this historical claim to independence is a bit fallacious.

In the 80s MK and use of Cornish died a bit of a death but I understand ( and Fred will know better than me now ) there has been a revival recently.
Down here they call Truro "up north" so you had no chance coming from Plymouth.

I believe the Cornish language is making a bit of a comeback but that may be more nostalgia than anything. I could be wrong as I don't get out much. But the separatists never seem to do well at elections and even an opportunity of a degree of autonomy with a Mayor of Cornwall position is being met with, at best, indifference.

I am certain you understood my comment about living near Falmouth . I was only spurred on by the comment from the presenter as whether Kernow was in fact part of England . I am sure it is but equally sure it could be one of those oversights in law that has just been accepted by us all .

I think the legal term that you are looking for about supposed intestacy law is bollocks Fred.

Re-reading that suggests that mum is no longer with us ....and I haven't even had my first glass of Friday vino yet 😂.
Well I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that mum is very much still with us ( pain in the bum as she is sometimes).
What I meant to say is that her family are from Cornwall with the most Cornish name imaginable , but whenever I asked mum she always insisted that she was from Devon 😂

Yeah I knew you were joking mate.

Re the England thing, its accepted generally by historians that the Saxons annexed Cornwall into Wessex well before England as a country was created. Anybody saying that there isn't a legal document from 1200 years ago legitimising this is clutching at straws that don't exist in my very none expert considered opinion.

Hi everybody. It's rained and awful lot today. I am wearing a jumper - winter is upon us.
I went to my first parish council meeting last night. It was pretty good. I'm now privy to some of the vitriol from the knuclke draggers. Mostly about taking down their flags in order to put the Christmas lights up. You wouldn't believe some of the comments. Really foul and quite threatening. But enough of that. We've got a busy few weeks ahead- Granny duties, two visits to Liverpool on 1st and 6th December. The first one is for the funeral of one of my Mum and Dad's oldest friends who passed away recently- while attending her brother's funeral! She was lovely - the head teacher of St Christopher's Primary School in Speke back in the day.
The second visit is for a Christmas get together with my cousins so that should be fun. We're also going to Nottingham to see Chris and Sophie in a couple of weeks and will probably have a little extra passenger with us because Mum is working.
I'm hoping the latest Epstein revelations will bring Trump down but he seems untouchable. One thing is sure he won't go quietly.
I hated PE too @Gwladysover . Mostly because I was rubbish at all of it. I still am. I aspire to be average! Our nuns were not really big into sport so a cross country run round Sefton Park was the hardest thing we did. There were plenty of shortcuts so upu didn't really have to exert yourself.
Have a lovely evening everyone x
Cross country! That takes me back. The school I went to was a grammar school and so high standards of behaviour were expected. Luckily for me and my two friends we never got caught on cross country calling into the local newsagents where they would sell you three number 6 tipped and a match, so we used to hide in the woods and meet the good girls on the way back 😂. Needless to say I wasn’t the most sporty but I did get a chance to play for the school team as goal shoot in netball but I think it was only because I am 5’9. Oh to be young again

Hope everyone is having a great Friday night. Took my car in for a service today - how many things can possibly need servicing when I only do about 3k a year in it. Anyway something in the air con has gone kaput so I can’t pick him up til Monday night🙁. Suddenly it’s turned into an eye watering bill too.
We’ve just booked a pre Xmas city break to Copenhagen and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve opened a danish tab on Duolingo- it sounds like the type of English you speak when you’re drunk. Can’t bear to go to a foreign country and not understand basic words that you might see it makes me feel disoriented.
Have a fab weekend everyone- I’m a bit disappointed there’s no Everton but thrilled to hear about Coleman’s performance 💙

It’s a nice place Val, you’ll enjoy it.

How are you enjoying your spot at HD? Didn’t you say you’d upgraded a bit - I bet it’s great
We went for Club View, it’s a great spec but it doesn’t live up to the “exclusive lounge” tag that was advertised. The teething troubles have been well documented, the food and drink outlets have improved but as in the other areas it needs more flat surface space to put your pint on.
