BBC - Phil Minshull?s Blog: Is Messi the greatest ever?

My view is that if he starts winning World Cups practically single handed, rather than being the jewel in the crown of a very good team that wins domestic and European trophies, he might be spoken of in the same breath as Diego Armando Maradona...the genius of association football.

Exactamundo.....I remain unconvinced....however I'm lookin forward to being proved wrong about him this summer...just hope if, and when,he comes up against England he has a crap game.

For me it's Edson Arantes Do Nasciemento .
The first true GENIUS I ever saw .
I can't have the cocaine-fuelled cheating little fat boy , personally .
However , this Messi kid , is THE REAL DEAL .
I've argued for hours with people who rated Ronaldo - the Manc' one - above him .
Fools .
He's boss .

He's a cracking player. No question. Now let's see him drag rat face Mascherano, Heinze and Veron to a World Cup win in South Africa.

I don't think it can directly be compared. Teams/players these days are a completely different animal to the 80's in fitness and tactics. Of course, there is no accounting for personal genius in a game, but I just don't see top level professionals getting waxed like Maradona used to do on a regular basis, by one individual.

It's a viewpoint, and it's always a subjective call.

All I'd say in relation to Maradona v Messi is go and have a look at the physical attacks Maradona was subject to and how he still imposed himself on every game he played at every level. Could anyone see someone like Messi having the same impact in the period Maradona was playing in? He'd have been bounced all over the pitch and, at a time of little protection, laughed at by referees and opposition players for complaining. On the other hand, if maradona were in his pomp today the opposition might as well get back on the team coach and **** off back home. He'd have had the ball at his feet for 89 minutes.

That may have been due to the fact that most of the time we only saw these great players at WCs and such. Well we did over here, not sure if the US got to see the South American League games.

So while we can judge Messi on every game for Barca, we only ever saw Diego and Pele destroy World Class teams every 4 years.

The acid test for Messi is clearly this WC and I feel for Him, the Argie team will struggle, mainly due to the clown in charge, a superb footballer, tainted by the hand of God, tainted by the cocaine, but still on his day could do anything and win World Cups on his own, same with Pele, although he did have a lot more support.

But as I say, Deigo is a joke of a manager, I wonder how much coke the people who appointed him had been snorting.
