Messi "best player of all time"

Well, again, you’re trying to frame a specific argument when it can’t be quantified by a single game, or a general statement. Theres lots of factors at play and Im just reflecting on different thoughts. You think Messi is the greatest of all time and im merely pointing out that doing it at the best club in the one league isnt a test of his quality where as all the other candidates have done it wherever they’ve been.

Im sure if messi had actually tested himself with his career then there’d be no argument, but there will always be a cloud over his talent when he has failed internationally - the only actual other team he’s ever played for.
Stats can be misleading. Messi’s however aren’t . They basically prove he is the GOAT .

Traditionalists vs. Modernists: The Fight For The Heart and Soul of a Post-Messi Barça
February 8, 2019

“He does not really seem human to me,” – Luis Enrique.

Oh, but he is.

For the generation of football fans that have watched the sport from 2005 onwards, there have only been two players who are worthy of being crowned the G.O.A.T. Their names are synonymous with talent, class, consistency, success and greatness, and the past decade is indelibly stamped with the mark of their iconic rivalry. But as with all good things, even greatness itself must eventually bow before Father Time, and with both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the wrong side of 30, it is time we start preparing for the end of an era.

Messi is now 31 years old, and in June he will turn 32. For football fans across the world, his retirement is a terrifying prospect to think about, and for Barcelona fans in particular, his departure will mark a watershed moment in the history of the club.

Questions abound as to what the club will look like when La Pulga has hung up his boots, and while most fans are looking to the transfer market for answers, the success of FC Barcelona in the post-Messi era will depend on what kind of President is leading the club. This is because the future departure of La Masia’s greatest export has the potential to trigger a massive power struggle at the heart of the club, and if history has taught us anything, this clash will be between the traditionalist and the modernist camps.

A good read.

since Messi made his debut, Sevilla have regularly if not always been at least a couple of levels above our beloved Everton.

Messi has scored 36 goals in 35 games against them. as crap as we often are we would freak out if one player was able to net that many against us. and we aren't even on Sevilla's level.

I really don't understand anybody arguing against him being the greatest of the last 30yrs. before that and even with Maradona....who the hell knows. we saw very little of the greats in comparison.
really...but the last 30 years?!? easily the best

For almost all his career he has been considered "arguably" the best striker in the game and at the same time the best playmaker in the game. in the history of the game many would say.

I don't see how any other player can match that really. Cronaldo
Ronaldo. Zidane. Henry.....whoever else. They are either one or the other and still only "arguably" better than him at that one side of the game.

And i don't think allowances for the quality of the team he has always played in, the fact he has only played in one league or this idea he hasn't performed at international level.......all that I don't think balances out the fact he has been considered the greatest of all time at two of the key roles in the sport for most of his career.

I've yet to see a decent logical argument for putting any player above him. personal preference is fine, like with Davids nonsense on here about Cronaldo, but an actual logical reason if you have watched Messi for his whole career and any other player you'd like to choose and saying they are better. don't get it. at all. you guys are silly.

Agree with all that except the argument he hasn’t done it at international level. He was Argentina’s record scorer at 30 (that’s more than Kempes, Maradona, Batistuta etc), and has got them to 3 competitions finals.
