2025/26 Merlin Röhl

Maybe so, but for me they are wide midfielders as well as attacking players, Barkley McCarthy and Barry was a very well balanced midfield three. For this team I want two in the middle and three behind the striker. Bit of a different formation from then I think.

similar formation id say

in 13/14 martinez lined the side up in 4231

——-McCarthy—-Barry

Mirallas——Barkley——-Deulofeu

—————Lukaku—————

could swap out Deulofeu for Pienaar , Osman or even McGeady depending on what Martinez was going for

famously against Arsenal it was more a 433 with Naismith as a false 9 and Lukaku right wing. but the above was the usual system

Moyes is also setting us up in a 4231

Be interesting to see whether Rohl plays the type of role Garner played at RCM.
With Garner in the middle and DH left.

And what that could do for Jake getting forward and into the box. 4 or 5 runs from deeper. Could be such a weapon coming in blind to grealish cross, chip.
If Rohl can slip into that higher back 3.

Someone at work told me yesterday that Moyes had been at a golf day and had said really good things about him after a day or two of seeing him in training. Take that with a pinch of salt, but would seem to corroborate that
No wonder he can’t catch the mole when he’s off golfing every minute, worse than Koeman this fella.

Be interested to see it but I think we'd miss the ball-winning and disruption of Gana hugely.

Anyone else feel sly on Charley?
Wasn't there a lot of chatter that Moyes was considering converting him to a DM? Also Merlin is versatile he can play anything from right back to CF on the pitch so I doubt it will interfere with Alcarez's development as I assume Moyes will utilize him deeper as we're pretty stacked for attacking options

Not really - I'm not sure Moyes was 100% sold on him (nor am I) and I think there's a reasonable chance we bought him simply because the price made sense and we will be able to sell at a profit in 12 months
I have never bought into the narrative that Moyes isn't keen on him as a player, I think Moyes has just tried to take his time in readapting him to the premier league and currently it suits his approach for Charly to play off the bench as he's an excellent addition to a game when the opposing defenders legs are starting to lag. Why does everyone want to sell our players now that we're getting closer to cultivating some actual depth in the squad? 😂

If the midfield gets to the point where Gana can be coming on, he might have just as big an influence, turning momentum or closing out a game.
But yeah, in the big ones he's gotta be there.

Giving a 2 year contract to a young player isn’t a glowing endorsement in your belief in them.

Like most clubs, we will need to trade players - and the best way of doing that is selling the ones who are expendable for PSR profit.

Alcaraz, McNeil, Beto, Patterson, Mykolenko, maybe even Iroegbunum. I'd say they're all in that category.

Not a problem for now, but we won't have another summer next year of selling nobody.

How many we need to sell could depend on the new shirt sponsor we get and the wedge we get from that

There's an additional year option included and I always interpreted the 2 year contract the other way , I assumed a new contract was going to devised one way or another if he stayed, so the number of years currently is moot if he thrives here.

I know all lads want to do is sell players
Even as soon as we buy them it’s resale value
If a player is doing the business for us why not keep him for as long as we can unless we get a significant upgrade
As soon as Dibling was bought we were told he’ll be worth 70 million in 2 years time
Same with Branthwaite
If they are that good give them long well paid contracts and keep them for as long as we can
