You have a sandwich, you butter it. Its that simple surely? Unless you are having purely tomato sauce or salad cream then its not needed but for a proper sandwich with filling and all that its just normal to butter the bread and then add mayonaise if required.

I once had salad cream on pizza and it was [Poor language removed] disgusting.

I only had salad cream to try and take away the taste of the pizza that was burnt to [Poor language removed] so that might be why it tasted so bad.

crunched up pine nuts with basil and olive oil................sounds ok
