The only thing I can think of is that Burnley want/demand the clause is 100% upfront, but will take a higher bid over a few years. Not sure they can do that mind.

The clause will probably have specific terms in how it is triggered. If a team meets the clause, then they can't stop the player leaving if he wants to leave.

It could be all the money up front for all we know.

Alan Nixon was a blag artist even back when he was a proper journalist in big papers. Now he is semi-retired but does have links with Blackburn, Burnley et al so he is probably putting stuff out for Burnley to stir the drink.
