Matthew Pennington

Can someone please tell me how he can not get in a match day squad but start in a big game, if he's good enough then surely koeman would have used him at some point this season.

Think the lad has had some unfair stick to be honest. Didn't have a great game but would rather see a defender who is lacking pace go all out to win the first ball rather than letting quick players like mane and coutinho get face on and go either way. Koeman should ultimately take responsibility for the defence on Saturday because he decided it was a good idea to go 3-3 vs mane firmino and coutinho, when none of our centre halfs had any pace and looked like they were running in treacle. I think Pennington has it in him to be a prem league defender but needs someone with pace beside him to cover him.

He wasn't great, but I don't think he was too horrific.

Coutinho has done that to supposedly some of the best defenders in the world and he had no protection from Mane, Coutinho and Firmino all game.

It was a big surprise for me that he started and it's not a decision I'd have made. But he'll learn from this and eh, at least he scored in front of the Kop. Ultimately I don't think he's got the physical attributes to be a Premier League centre back, but I hope I'm wrong.

Koeman and Unsworth have talked about Pennington being ready recently and he was no worse than jags or Williams. Have said that we need two centre halfs to replace jags and f-m. Would be more than happy for Pennington to be our fourth choice centre half next year on the proviso that we have got two new centre halfs in and jags and f-m have gone. I thought Williams was going to be a monster for us but hasn't quite worked out that way but would still be a good third choice next year.

Please not tomorrow. Please no.

I agree mate.

Pennington is not long back from a long injury lay off and since he's been back he has been playing second string football where, overall, he's looked comfortable. He's then thrown in the deep end against the most mobile front 3 in the league, one of which has been one of the best players in the league this season and the other 2 are Brazil Internationals. He was way off the pace and I'm not surprised.

Mobility is not Pennington's strong point and sadly not Jagielka's and Williams's either. Our back 3 on Saturday were all too similar. Plus Pennington, as far as I'm aware, has absolutely no experience playing in a back 3 in a competitive game.

I don't doubt he has a good career ahead of him in professional football, hopefully at premier level. Not sure whether it will be with us given our recent ambition since Moshiri joined us. I think Holgate is slightly ahead of him and he has stiff competition from Browning and Galloway too and I can only see perhaps one of those three still being here by the end of next season.

Absolutely no need for some of the stick he's had on here though.

I actually think playing 3 at the back didn't help him... we were out of shape and didn't know how to play it.... with the current players keep it as a back 4.

He may look different when playing alongside jags or williams.
