Obviously it was a dull match and loads of stuff to chew on where were falling short.

Putting that aside for one minute though, there were some positives tonight.

Barkley is gonna turn into some f*cking player. He's nearly there already, he's a blue and he's ours.
Delofelu had a very good game indeed. We'll be seeing more of him soon if not initially from the bench.
Lots of fringe players got a very run out there and the fitness with it.
Because of the changes we won't have burned out too many players before the weekend's game.
We'll never likely see a midfield of Osman and Heitinga again.
Kone can only get better.
Were through to the next round.

Osman and Gibson as our only CMs ?

Obviously a boss cm is needed, but we can mend and make do there. That group of forwards however give me the sh*ts. Very, very concerned about not having anything approaching a clinical finisher on the playing staff.

Our build up play to the last third of the pitch is too slow and predictable, so far most of the sides we have played have had enough time to get everyone organized behind the ball and then just wait for us to loose possession. We are going to see this time ans time again unless we mix it up with direct football or speed up the tempo in the last third of the pitch. The other issue is our finishing in front of goal is a shambles which makes me think that we might be better of going 2 upfront and get the points on the doors rather than playing catch up later.

Agreed, we've seen two totally negative visiting teams so far

This. There's no wonder we're struggling to break the opposition down when they put eleven men behind the ball! Unfortunately, I can't see many teams coming to Goodison looking for the win, so again, our inability to put games to bed may be our undoing.

However, the way in which we are controlling games should see us concede fewer chances and therefore goals. Plus, it'd be interesting to see us get an early goal then see how we fare when the opposition are chasing the game. Look at the football we played in the final 5 mins of ET tonight with more space to work with.

It is vitally important that we score early and make the opposition chase the game.

So in summary, nothing has changed from last season.

What was also apparent tonight is just how easily teams can catch us swiftly on the break, even Stevenage were capable of providing us with a few scares tonight.. :/

Been our undoing for a couple of years. We've rightly earned a fearsome reputation at home so you get managers like clarke and laudrup blatantly playing for the point at goodison.

- think the speed'll come with familliarity, but there's a lack of connectivity in the last 3rd too when we did play with speed.

Agree about the tempo... far too slow for the way we are trying to play. We either need to speed it up or just go more direct tbh.
