Mass exodus of UK football journalists to American website 'The Atheletic'

I actually quite like Oliver Holt as well

Ronay is an odd one. Some weeks I like him and others I don't. He's a bit too pro Liverpool for my personal tastes, although his writing itself is decent

Each to their own, but his writing does my head in. All those flowery metaphors and tortured descriptions that I'm sure he has a notebook full of.

I meant Jonothan Wilson above, incidentally.

"Inverting The Pyramid" is a good read

Brian Glanville's "History of the World Cup" isn't a bad read either, though he's very much a product of his time when it comes to the sort of language he likes to use especially, when it comes to players of African/Caribbean descent

I'm willing to bet you were the sort of teacher who bemoaned the lack of the cane

I'm also interested to see if you considered such things as autism and dyslexia to be "behavioural deficiencies" as well

I think most of us have had a teacher like you, and it probably soured a lot of us on the whole process
I did, but I would seldom have used it. If caning hadn't been outlawed we would certainly, in my opinion, have less knife crime and more disciplined children.

Autism I see as a superiour skill set. What some call obsessiveness, I see as an ability to focus and exclude distractions. There was a lad I taught who had severe dyslexia. With my support he got an A* in his science. I was genuinely surprised when I learned it was his only gcse pass. My nephew is also dyslexic and an qualified dentist, his dyslexic father a judge.

So no, I see neither of those as behaviour issues.

I'm sorry but that is a disgraceful post. No basis whatsoever for most of what you've written.

Match reports are a real pain, to be fair, and not conducive to good writing. Your deadline is usually less than half an hour after FT which, if a team has mounted a late comeback or something, means swift rewrites and no chance to reflect on what you've just seen. You are simply relying on your notes, your memory and your colleagues/competitors who are in the same boat... Which is why I don't write football.

The number of jobs-for-the-boys in sports journalism is pretty limited, as the money is crap and getting worse. Ian McIntosh is a guy I really like (also a blue) who saw the writing on the wall a while back and started looking for new ways to be able to write the stuff he liked. He did the set-pieces website first of all (his series on playing as Everton in Champ Man is hilarious) and now makes podcasts for ESPN.
Big fan of MacIntosh. He is actually a Southend United fan but does seem to have a soft spot for us. Also, I think he mainly only does podcasts for his own company now (Muddy Knees Media). Totally Football Show, Totally Football League show etc.

Jonathan Wilson is great as you mentioned. I like Michael Cox, Rafael Honigstein and Daniel Storey too. Bit of a trend here as they tend to be the guys that are on The Totally Football show often but I do think they are really good writers too.

They are all due to a meeting in facility cyclone b. Hopefully.

So yes, Chris did want the cane back, so I was right on that one

I'll concede the behaviour part though. Let's just say the school I went to had a certain attitude to people with those sorts of conditions and the language used was eerily similar to what Chris was using

They've got mega money and shares in the company apparently even though The Athletic currently runs at a loss in the states.

I use it for their NFL, MLB, NHL, and Fantasy Football but I'm genuinely stumped at how that will translate over here. Those leagues have way more access than the Prem and they've hired a load of Footy insiders rather than good writers.

If they just hide ITK info behind a paywall, it won't work. But, I can't see where their quality writing is coming from outside of Dan Taylor. They want Liew from the Indy but not happening apparently.

They're banking on all the ITK journos who get decent info about certain teams to pull in fans to subscribe to keep them afloat, Meh can't see this working will last maybe a year.
