Yeah I agree with that, his decision making and sending of danger are both awful. He’s one of many modern footballers - a number of them play for us -who I don’t think has a natural position. There are some players you can look at and you just think ‘he’s a centre half/winger etc’ even when that’s not where they’re playing. With holgate I don’t get that sense at all, he just doesn’t seem a natural fit, nor does he at full back. I did wonder at one point whether he might be best suited to a midfield destroyer role but his ability on the ball probably stops it.
I agree with that.
Re our squad, I do think you see the consequence of 7 managers, 3 DOFs playing multiple systems over quite a short period of time on the squad. Godfrey is probably the worst example really, a lad who has talent but to me really misses continuity. I think this, over and above a lack of effort is a big reason for the collapses. There is just no foundation.
As for Holgate, he just doesnt quite excel in any department. Hes small, hes not quick enough, not good enough on the ball. I'm not saying hes necessarily bad at all of those things, but hes not good enough at any one of them to cover for weaknesses in other areas.
I also think, the art of defending has essentially been lost since teams started playing with a 1/3. I remember playing CB and we almost always played against a 2, and it meant you had to really learn to defend. Pressure, cover, depth at all times. Holgate looks to be a classic defender who hasnt learnt those basics really.
I'd tend to agree, his build and approach to the game would seem to suit midfield. Hes a decent tackler (but tackles too much for a CB) and got a good build for a midfielder. I'd agree hes probably not good enough on the ball, but probably think he has a better chance on that position. I dont think managers really change positions for players much anymore though.
