So no question of a large signing on fee?
Obviously there'll be a signing on fee, like there is with any transfer.

Can't see it being huge - he hasn't got the enormous profile that usually leads to big inflation on a Bosman. Plus he's by all accounts made it pretty clear that his aim is to come here.

I'd normally agree, but the Villa fans viewpoint is that he is absolutely woeful, and they can't wait to get rid of him, they certainly won't be losing any sleep about losing him. Couple that with the fact that we are supposed to be a big club that is challenging for honours and you can see why the purchasing of Cleverley will not go down well.
Is it? Every Villa fan I've spoken to has said he's been one of their only players who has performed at anything approaching an acceptable level.

We're not though

Only a Everton fan would delude themselves into thinking that

We are a mid table filler club and have been for some time

So no question of a large signing on fee?

Not sure about large but yeah all free transfers get a signing on fee so no matter who it's is coming in for "free" they want a golden hello.

The alternative to this is to pay a transfer fee and then on top of that pay a signing on fee as standard.

If it's genuinely free / dirt cheap in the PL, then it probably isn't worth touching unless the long term plan is yet more mediocrity.

I'm aware of the reality, and I get lambasted every time I mention our reality as a mid-table also-ran, but we are at least SUPPOSED to be a big club, and we are SUPPOSED to have ambitions of getting into the top four.

Those ambitions seem to be disappearing under Martninez, mid-table mediocrity seems to be the accepted level of ambition at the moment.
