Martinez must adapt

The dropping of the 'nice' team starts with Martinez, he has to set the agenda. For instance, during his pre match Friday press conference he should state what he wasn't the ref to look out for. Wenger couldn't wait to tell the ref what he wanted to see against Bayern, he constantly does it when they play Stoke and has in the past mentioned our physical approach.

When we play Arsenal at Goodison Martinez needs to say that he hopes the ref will look out for the 'tactical' fouling of the Arsenal players i.e. bringing a player down when on the counter attack. Flamini on Barkley that didn't get booked, then on Stones that got him booked, which means he should have had a second yellow and off. By being booked Flamini couldn't tackle Barkley when he broke away and laid on the goal. Wenger has been using this tactic since he came to Arsenal and has got away with it.

When we play the RS, Martinez should say he wants the ref to look out for players play acting, as if they had their legs broken, diving around the area to win free kicks and bookings, diving in the box to con the ref into giving a penalty. He should point out that he hopes our players will be able to jump for the ball in the area and not get wrestled to the ground.

Martinez needs to set the example. Analyse every team that uses cynical tactics and mention it in the press conference.

Quite right mate, no more mister nice guy, if you can't beat them, join them.

How exactly does Martinez need to adapt? Surely it's the players.

The managers philosophy feeds down throughout the squad.

Therefore, if a manager wants something to happen in the squad in terms of play, he's got to be an advocate of it.

I've seen little to suggest Martinez is a fan of matching cynical opposition tactics thus far, so it seems a bit absurd of him to expect it from the squad he manages.

That said, as stated earlier, McCarthy is certainly a Martinez-type player and he has that extra bit of something about him - he'll moan at a ref, slow down play, clip the heels of a player on the counter etc. That's what we need more of, and hopefully this is a sign that Martinez identifies that and is willing to address it.

But then you read that he's interested in Jack Rodwell. Massive contradiction there.

RM teams play good football and keep the ball, but like Mourinho says, Everton have the ball but do not create chances. When we go forward we leave gaps behind. Arsenal scored 2 quick goals on the break against us, RS scored 3 on the break. If we are playing Barry and McCarthy in front of the defense, then they should just sit there and let Baines and Coleman do all the attacking - just fill the gaps at the back should the opposition team break on us.
