And the only way to counter that is by playing the system better, either by existing players pping their game or getting better ones in).

It's easy to see where the whole thing has fallen down: centre backs are crucial to the system he plays, but we have four central defenders and only one who can play the system.

Last season they were performing ok with the aid of an in form Barry. This season that's not been the case. Ergo - you change the personnel.

Rubbish, they were not playing Roberto's wika waka football philosophy last season.

But his case is that players who performed the system last season, and to a large degree the early part of this season, needed to work through their poor form. A reasonable view. The fact we've had three of the people responsible for the defensive platform for the way we play (Distin, Jagielka, Barry) all atrocious for long periods and at the same time was unforeseeable (though getting a decent Cb in during the summer was and many of us said so at the time).

He's obviously now going to have a big decision to make against WBA - given the upturn in spirit has coincided with playing the ball less in the defensive third against better teams: does he, against a team coming to play 442 and press us but leave gaps between the lines, go back to a more probing style?

I think we'll see Everton's possession stats go back to normal tomorrow night. I dont envisage a game where we release the ball downfield very quickly. Martinez will use the confidence gained against City especially to try and coax a more measured performance out of his defence and holding cm's.

Dear me Dave, I think you said some where that too much attention was paid to stats and here you are lauding possession stats to win the WBA game. Got news for you possession does not win games, getting upfield and scoring goals does the trick.

People will whatever they want to see and not what is actually happening in reality. Other teams results are as important as ours at this point. A Hull win would be disastrous for our survival chances - a draw wouldn't help us either. In Pardew Pulis and Bruce we have three canny managers with a pedigree of getting the max out of their players - which is as it should be. Martinez has no such track record so in reality it's only Leicester Burnley and QPR that we can maybe rely on for continued poor form.

I honestly think we are one of the four teams that could get relegated, without a change of manager.

You funny.

That's one hell of a mental affliction you've got their Kev.

Rubbish, they were not playing Roberto's wika waka football philosophy last season.

We were better last season but I think sometimes we all get a little carried away when comparing this season to last. I can name a few games last season when we were poor and got beat and some when we were poor and snatched a win or draw. A lot of teams were average last season and we took advantage of that....teams have improved this season making very astute acquisitions while we laboured to get Barry and Lukaku signed up.

I'm not saying the players are entirely blameless but, It is interesting to note that last season we won or snatched draws by scoring goals in the last 10 minutes of games - I make it 8 games in the Prem but that's off the top of my head. So far this season we haven't done that many times (Sunderland?) and usually that's a fitness issue - and that is down to the manager no one else.

Can't believe you are re-opening this debate after the recent change in emphasis (sic) has yielded improved performances and results.

Who exactly are the "hoofball nostalgia brigade" anyway ?

I haven't reopened anything. The manager has. He's re-emphasised the style he's going for and that he wont be deflected from it. He's said that in response to a media generated conclusion (that's been adopted by some supporters crowing about a "u-turn") that he's turned away from the system he's known for.

I'm merely suggesting on the strength of this that we'll see an Everton performance tomorrow that reverts back to the patient build up against a team that can be played through. We should be expecting the type of set up we saw prior to the first WHU cup game. He'll do that because it's the way of playing that will get us results more often than not when it's played correctly.

He was chatting bubbles in that piece.

More interested in protecting his ego than being honest I'm afraid. The last 3 games did signal a change in how we play and it was effective. If you're suggesting that he'll revert back to type tomorrow and to a way of playing that's been completely ineffective for months, then I hope you're wrong.

I couldn't give a toss about his 'philosophy' at the minute, I want to see some points on the board to get us away from the relegation scrap.

What change did you see? Personally I saw Lukaku remove his head from his arse and start playing like a God, Stones return from injury and several other players improve their performance. We still played out from the back as normal when we got Stones back.
