Martinez - busy man

...I think the point being made about the extent of personnel change is fair, as is the fact that its been managed with subtlety. I honestly thought we would do well to keep the status quo post-Moyes, but this fella has moved us on. That in itself is some achievement.

Exactly, all we know is Moyes rated both Oviedo and Stones enough to buy them. Given the injuries we had last season in the positions that both players are for backup it's likely they'd have been given playing time.

Moyes wasn't here so therefore Martinez bought them through, therefore they deserve a place in the list of players Martinez has purchased or bought through surely?

What's really weird here is that I feel like your defending Moyes against me.. There are a few around here who would find that ironic/amusing I'm sure.

I agree... The name probably doesn't help..

hmmm any suggestions on a better name for a thread about Martinez being responsible for being able to field 11 players and also his general transfers... Actually never mind.

Lol... I swear to god people didn't even bother to read your post and just started bashing your line up...
Or perhaps, people simply prefer other users to be precise with their comments. He may have genuinely left Mirallas and Howard out: how were we to know? He may not have rated them?

However, back to the point at hand. While Martinez has clearly brought in almost an entire squad since taking the role of manager, it is perfectly fair to argue that not all are up to the required standard individually; or as a collective: or at least not as of yet. Personally, to claim that squad is formidable is overzealous - that's not linked to the original post by the way. I agree, I was shocked by the actual quantity of signings.

Neverthless, swinging back to my point. Alkaraz has shown to be a liability; Besic is an unknown quantity as of yet; Atsu is an unknown (if he signs); Barkley is a wonderful talent but can still fairly inconsistent based on last years performances; McGeady is developing and arguably could be a first. I am not slating Martinez nor his signings, but if we were to put that squad out (in the original post) against a medium-good Premier League side I would be genuinely worried. As overall additions to the squad though - I agree, I am happy with the transfer activity.

We need a decent look at a fit alcaraz, same with kone. Robles looks nervous more than anything. I'm willing to give all three this season before deciding if they are bad buys or not

Sorry mate didn't mean no offence. I thought you were referring to the line up in which he clearly stated was only the players Martinez brought in. But you may have been referring to his Jags, Distin, Coleman additions... Tbh it's all confusing... People need to be more precise

The original post also says to swap Robles and Alkaraz and the side is pretty mint, I stand by that.
You put just Howard and Jagielka in there and its as a good team.
Besic is unknown, but it doesn't take a lot to see the quality, Atsu is entirely unknown to me, Mirallas should start ahead of him, but he is quick and can score so he's not going to drag us backwards even if he isn't top drawer... imo.

Looking at that team mentioned in the OP...one thing is very clear in general...even though some players were bought in by DM etc. Thats that DM used to play the older players not really trusting in young talent..and that RM is building for the future mixing young players with a lot of potential with more experienced players. The way RM is adding players will ensure that we have a great team...and I mean a great team...within the next few years...imo

Hate the way people slate Robles. Get behind him FFS he's at our boss club. He's very young for a keeper and there is plenty of time for him to shake the mistakes off and also he needs game time to feel comfortable.
Well you would say that: you signed him! On a serious note though.... Being at our 'boss' club does not provide an automatic assurance that they are a good player.

I am not saying he should be hung out to dry or hung from a tree like a 'heathen', yet there is still cause for some subtle criticism of the lad.

Yes he has youth on his side; he showed some potential in some early games last season. Martinez also clearly sees something in him.

Nevertheless, his recent performances are open for critique. That is fair; that is just. That is how objective individuals live their lives.

Ramierez against Sutton at home and Arsenal away come straight to mind from last season. Then, there has been some matches this pre-season.

Hopefully he comes good. I want him to be great! But, he needs to earn the trust of the fans: the only way he can do that is by performing.

Basically what I am saying is - we must support the lad while also being open to possible inefficiencies. Blind loyalty doesn't work.

It is very easy to be negative, and we are all guilty of it sometimes, but what the OP was trying to say was that their had been quite a substantial overhaul to our squad. With no one leaving who we have missed.

Obviously a X11 of RM's additions would not be amazing because he has added to a great team not had to replace a X11 from the start. Moyes left us with a very good team. RM has polished this
