Martinez: “McCarthy should be available for tomorrow”

Bench hopefully. He's been out for ages so needs to be eased back in and not break down again.

Having said that I fully expect him to be starting as Besic is out.

....if there is still a risk regarding it might be a risk worth taking given the importance of the game and Besics absence.
It's certainly a game where it's worth take a slightly more risky approach, however only if he's reached a certain level of fitness / readiness.

The real concern is whether he's not actually reached an acceptable level of fitness and hence being rushed back jeopardises him further.

We can't afford to have him and McCarthy out injured, thus if there's anything more than a slight risk then it's not worth the risk; bench at most.

I just worry that the attraction of the League Cup final will cloud the coaching staff and McCarthy's own decision.

....he'll certainly be desperate to play and I'm sure he's been pushing hard in training but there's no test like a game like this.

That's my worry as sometimes desire clouds a sound judgement: McCarthy says he's fit to play when he may not be and then he crumples over.

Short term it would be detrimental in that crucial game forcing a change of approach, and in the long-term we'd be without two high-tempo mids.

We've had an awful lot of injuries over Martinez's tenure regarding thigh, knee, calf and hamstrings so their judgement is slightly suspect already.

....I might be wrong but I think McCarthy has a groin problem (not connected to his previous hamstring issue). Saying that, if these things persist they can become hernias requiring an op and a spell on the sidelines. Hopefully he's fit enough to play but I agree it's not the type of game you want to play in at 90%.

Don't trust anything Martinez says regarding fitness of players.....leave him out tomorrow and play the reserve side Sunday (should be enough to see off a league 2 side

And it could involve extra time which would be a big shift in first game back for a while.
