Haha! The second goal was a shocker! Got his angles all wrong, was caught in no man’s land, went to ground early and made it so so easy for the striker to chip into the middle of the goal.

The geezer is clean through and has all the time in the world to pick his spot.

First one is a great reaction save from a snap shot going Top Corner that he palms away wide. Only the most deluded football fan would expect a keeper to do better there. The fault for that goal rests in the lack of defence coordination both in the build up and with McNeill not covering the defensive position at the back post to clear it.

The second goal the striker is clean through and has all the time in the world to pick his spot. The fault rests with Keane and Garner there. You expect a striker to score in those situations, and if the keeper saves it you give props. But a failure to save it doesn't warrant criticism. Basically a penalty

Give your head a wobble, just trying to find fault for the sake of it

You asked why I thought he was poor and I gave you my reasons.

You clearly disagree which is fine but I'm not sure why you think I'm joking and deluded. And I'm definitely far from the only person who thinks it was a poor performance

But the main point is that our manager should have picked our first choice keeper because he was available for selection.

If he had came off his line he could have got to the ball first. If he had stayed on his line he wouldn't have been chipped from 15 yards.

What he did was the worst thing a keeper can do and made up the wolves players mind.

Look at the goal again. From the second the pass is played, the striker runs around 25 yards, striking the ball 12 yards out from our goal. Travers is 7 yards out - unless his starting position was somewhere in Row D, I’m not sure how on earth he’s still only that far from his line.

I instantly thought he should have had time to be out to it. In fact, with how high we were pushing up at that point, he should have been staying on the edge of his box to mop up any counter attacks as a starting position.

I also don't think the first goal was particularly difficult to do something better with the ball than softly palm it back into a dangerous area tbh.

I think he definitely could have pushed it wider, especially since the ball was already going across the goal. I'm not asking him to catch it obviously, I'm asking for it to go wider or for a corner, which is definitely the right play there for a keeper.

I've no doubt he could do better in that situation. He's not Pickford, but that doesn't mean he is too blame. The blame is on the CBs and the midfield there.

When I and anyone else who isn't part of this blindly critical sect of Everton fans see that goal, we see a Garner error and Keane ball watching (shock) - stuck in no mans land. We see Tarky caught on his heels and the striker therefore travelling without any pressure, slowing himself down and picking his spot not once, twice, but three times. This is what freezes Travers.

Would Allison have saved it? Possibly not. Would he have made it more difficult for the striker? Definitely. He's a better keeper.

But then why stop there in search of perfection? Why not criticise every play, made by every player, because they could, feasibly have done better? Because that would be insanity. Son would have made a better fist of Illy's chance towards the end, ipso facto Illy has had a bad game.

Travers is not directly at fault for either of the goals. In fact on the first one he does brilliantly to save the initial effort. Doesn't make any other errors in the game and his distribution was good. That's all there is to it

I think if you were to ask most if not all professional keepers, they'd say he has done exceptionally well to set himself at such short notice (it doesn't become apparent who is getting to the ball or what they are intending on doing with it until very late), then have the reflexes and dexterity to save it, and even then to parry it (basically) away from goal.

But you think he should turn it away for a corner. We'll never agree

Allison, Pickford, or any top level keeper get to that ball first.

This isn’t the Keane, Garner or Tarkowski thread, it’s the Travers one. So don’t be surprised when people are mentioning that he should have done better for the goals he concedes.
