Transfer Rumour Marcos Rojo

I enjoy your posts mate and generally find them to be interesting, knowledgable and informative.

On Rojo though I think you are wrong.

In a back 3 I could just about accept him.

But one of 2 centre halves he is a total liability.

Zouma has more pace , ability and reads the games better as well as having better physicality.
Have you ever seen Zouma play?

He is a liability according to Stoke fans.

Mina is rubbish Barcelona signed him for 11 million he played maybe 5 times then scored 3 goals in the world cup and new his price is 25-27 million I don't want him he's not a good defender and he's slow and we already have enough defenders with those attributes. At least Rojo has pace about him better buy him than spend the same on a defender who's played maybe 10-15 games in a full year.
Are you basing Mina being rubbish on his World Cup performances, extensive scouting of Barcelona reserves or a computer game.?
Just wondering

Elucidate please
Besides the two footer on Gana and the lovely history of cards, he also has a lovely history of arrests, lawsuits involving personal stuff and football. Wikipedia mentioned the affair and blackmail thing, I thought he settled out of court for smashing his neighbor over the head with a bottle back in Argentina, think he's been arrested for battery before then. He's pretty nuts, man.

Don't get me wrong, Silva wants us to build and spring our players out from the back. I've said from day one we NEED center backs that can play the ball forward to compete against some of the pressing tactics in the PL now and ESPECIALLY in Silva's system. He is pretty good with the ball.

That's why I'm not sure Zouma is the best fit, he's not that great with the ball at his feet. If we got a CM with some size and an aerial presence, we wouldn't have SUCH a compelling need to have a monster on the backline.

But I still have hope we could get Mina and Zakaria. That would be fantastic. I'd take a punt on Rojo, too, as he can play LB in a pinch, but not at 30M. That would be silly.

I think Rojo will be a bit like Walcott, who's reception was a bit luke warm at first, but you could see from game 1 he was a cut above what we have. We finished on 49 points last season, most of the sides in the top 6 are 70+ points and only less if they end up dropping the league points to focus on cups if they are out of the running. 5 years ago it would be like comparing a side who's 13th to one that was 3rd. Their squad players are better than our first team players.

That being said my 2 worries are; firstly his price. We should be paying nowhere near what has been mentioned. Secondly I do worry we are just repeating the mistakes of the last couple of years, albeit doing so more sensibly. It is more Allarcyde than Walsh/Koeman but in the end unless we sign players with a resale value we get to the same predicament.

The lads a decent player though. He played at Goodison one year and I felt Lukaku was going to run riot against him and Jones, and basically they both shut him out and were as defensively solid as any side at Goodison. They went on a good run and kept a lot of clear sheets. Neither of them were glamorous names but they were both impressive around that time.
But, some would prefer Minna without really knowing anything much about him or having seen him play outside of the World Cup.
I like the idea of signing Minna, young, athletic and huge... but he hasn't really been tested at the top level, because he couldn't get in the team.

We have no problem paying a large fee for a player that couldn't get into the Barca team but have a problem with paying money for players that actually have premiership experience with an equally big club.... I find it contradictory.... and I don't even believe we will sign Rojo.

I think the thing with Mina is he is a different age profile though. If it was Lindelof or Rojo I think you'd see a different response. The glib truth is there will be very limited re-sale value to signing Rojo so best case scenario we get a solid defender who will probably decline at some stage over the next 5-6 years (unless you get lucky like with a Distin). The worst case scenario is he ends up declining quite sharply and you are stuck with him on good wages like we have with Williams. While he's younger than Williams and a better physique he is also more dependant on speed and has a much worse injury record.

I know a lot of fans don't want us to think of resale value and things like that, which is fair enough, but then you can't really complain when the money runs out. There needs to be clarity one way or another, either Moshiri (or Usmanov) will continue to fund us, in which case get the best players you can, or there is a limited amount of resources, in which case we need to buy more astutely in the market.

Mina is 23 and I suspect would get a big move in 2-3 years time if he did well (a little like Maguire now). I must confess I have only seen him in the game against England, and while it's rare for me to go all in on a player, I was very impressed with him and said as much immediately after the game. For me he was the best player on the pitch, bullied Kane and looks physically well set for the PL. That being said part of our long term success has to be buying players like Mina (and in truth, Lozano, Richarlinson) from source as opposed to from PSV, Barca and Watford.

So yes I'm not quite sure it's as simple as out and out snobbery though there is a little of that in there. Mina for me is a far better option than Rojo, but if we can get both, and Rojo at a sensible fee then I'd be happy enough with that.

You say Mina has not been tested at the top level, don't you think the world cup is top level and he came out of it really well, as you say he is young and athletic, I believe because he is young and still learning he will fit well with us.
