We can’t just blame the players all the time and pretend the manager has no faults. Silva has a history of conceding goals through setpieces.
He does but this squad has a bit of a history of being a bunch of cowards under 4 completely different managers inside 2 seasons. I recall having these set piece conversations on here on one of our many recent managers thinking it was the way we were being set up. Koeman maybe? The new signings are a step in the right direction, largely theyve been our best players this season so there is a ray of light there that we may get what we need going forward from a recruitment perspective. It staggers me the deadweight we have in the squad before we even look at the first 11 who in reality atleast 50% of the players starting aren't good enough to be champions league level which according Mr moshiri and co is the target.

We can do both.

As a player though I would be thinking "hmmm we are crap at defending free kicks, maybe I should not give away this TOTALLY UNNECESSARY foul."

Also there probably comes a point where is a professional defender who has played there all his life, you take a look at how we defend set pieces and think "maybe I should try something that does work" instead of blindly following the zonal plan.

It genuinely shouldn't matter whether it's zonal or man marking for that type of thing though. If the defender isn't switched on enough to attack the ball then they won't be switched on enough to know where their man is going either. Silva is still ultimately responsible for our poor defending from set pieces, but we need to move away from the fixation with it being due to zonal marking.

You can also mark with zonal marking. When Jimenez runs in front of Richarlinson he has to get close to him. He has to make it harder. For many of our players it seems to be zonal marking= not marking.

This is a fair point.

Both point are valid.

This is what winds me up.

The way we defend at the moment reminds me of when I was captaining a cricket team and we had to draft a young lad in to play at the last minute. He kept straying 10/20 yards from where he was supposed to be when he was fielding, so I put a flag on the boundary and told him to stay by it. About 3 balls later the ball goes rolling past him for 4, and when I ask what the hell he's doing he says 'you said stand by the flag so i'm standing by the flag, I can't win can I?'! You'd think that professional footballers would be able to take a bit more responsibility than that, but it seems not.

You defend as a team. Zonal just places less emphasis on individual responsibility than man-marking (i.e if your man scores, it's your fault).

If Silva is using a zonal system and we have one man within that who goes "maybe I won't follow this plan" as you suggested, that's EXACTLY where we'd be going wrong.

Zonal isn't the problem. The system works. Lots of teams in England and across Europe use it effectively. In fact, I think i'm right in saying the two best defences in the league currently use it.

It's poor execution and implementation, but lots of teams do suffer in the immediate aftermath of switching from a man-to-man to zonal system as it can take some time to get your head around your own personal responsibility and where your invisible zone boundaries begin and end.

He does know if hes sacked again he will be lucky to get a sunday league appointment. He does not seemed arsed in the slightest
He got enough money for the rest of his life. In Portugal living is cheap. WIth all the money his got so far he can live like a king. Hasnt the need to work a single day for the rest of his life. In his place i wouldnt give a f.. about Everton and football! In my opinion he is doing just that.
