I would be very careful about making libelous comments like that if I were you.
As a retired Solicitor I can tell you that Baines and Jagielka are likely to have a very strong cause of action against you.
I think that the moderators should also be aware that you place the Forum in potential peril.

You gonna do some pro-bono defence work for Davek?

I think it's a mix of both, Zatman.

Players need to adapt, manager needs to adapt to the players he has. You don't have to sacrifice your style/philosophy to do that, it's just been pragmatic.

And we know Silva can do that. Chelsea away was a perfect example this season. He did it a fair few times with Hull - Anfield springs to mind when they won and Niasse scored, and Watford.

I think if you remove all of the set piece goals conceded above the league average this season then we would be alot higher and also in the enxt round of the cup.

Aside from the set pieces weve been a top 7 side and of course confidence would be higher without the set piece drama.

Silva uses zonal marking...hes also tried a mix of zonal and man marking...whats next? Man marking...which (as weve seen under other managers) has the same result.

Once youve exhausted every option then you need to point at the players desire to win a header.

with the threat of legal action hanging heavy over this forum I would like to take this opportunity to declare that any libellous comments I might have made (eg Capt Jags's and Bainsey's nefarious jig saw activity in the FF bogs) were due to temporary insanity (induced by watching Everton).

I agree with that to an extent, but I won't be hypocritical, as I slated RM for his set-piece woes.

Come up with a better way of doing it.

That's not to say zonal marking can't work, but it's clear our s******* players literally need guiding through it.

I honestly think this is where it's gone wrong, in general.

At the start of the season, I think it was evident that in training Silva was genuinely moving the players around the pitch and they were following those instructions in game. Our defensive issues weren't actually that bad during our good run. I'm sure we went about 6/7 games without conceding from a set play.

Basically, we were doing the basics. Our issues came from not converting chances and getting punished at the other end (Arsenal, West Ham, Man Utd to an extent, Liverpool).

Since then it's been pretty atrocious obviously, and then in recent weeks any semblance of solidity from set plays has disappeared. The main issue is also not winning the second ball - which we don't do anywhere on the pitch right now.

I really think Silva needs to get back to basics, because ultimately that's the only thing that works with these players.

I will counter it with it can't be all on the players. If you don't have the players to play a certain way, then adapt, that's part of being a good manager. He's making simple and frankly scary errors at the moment, over and over again.

We'll see what happens in the next 15 games.
Oh it could be teaching, instruction, absolutely. But it's not zonal vs man. That's just silly.

And again, were we the worst defensive team in open play in the entire league last year. So we are better overall. Again, that also could be the players, not the coach.

So you want to play a system that doesnt suit the modern manager but does suit the players....

Ergo The Allardyce method.

You dont hire a manager and expect him to change his whole system and beliefs to suit some players who arent up to it...thats daft.

Then those fans are glory hunters and should probably take a look at themselves.

Weve seen that under previous managers...the only time they managed to succeed man to man is with 10 men behind the ball at all times sat on the keeper.

Younger fans isnt it...the only explanation...

Thats it really...the rebuild has just begun and certain 'fans' dont want to rebuild...dont want change but want to win...

Its a bizarre attitude.
Everton fans being glory hunters? Lol

But neither is man marking. We man marked under Allardyce, Koeman and Martinez and were just as bad. As a team, we have been awful defensively for years.

Zonal marking does not mean four players stand around one bloke. That picture of Millwall's winner the other day - the only player in his correct zone is Digne. The four at the other side of the box have not executed zonal marking, as they've all followed the ball.

I'm much less concerned by zonal marking than I am by the fact our system is crap which then puts pressure on the defence as we can't attack in phases. It's all hit and hope.

That's more what Silva needs to sort out, imo.
Agree 100% with this. Zonal marking is - understandably - the thing that people are losing their heads over at the moment, but it's way down the list of issues for me. The set up of the team just isn't working, so we can't control the game, so we concede set pieces, so we concede goals.

One of the reasons why i'm willing to give Silva time is because I can see why he's setting us up like he is. The lack of a goal threat from everywhere else means that he feels like he has to shoehorn Sigurdsson into the side, and that's causing us problems. If he changes it with our current personnel though, we just create a different problem. Say we bring Davies in instead to the midfield to give a bit more structure and solidity (yes yes I know), move Richarlison back up top and put Bernard in on the left, the entire starting 11 has 62 PL goals between them. A third of those come from our right back. It's no surprise that he's trying to give more of a goal threat then, but I think we're at a point where somethings got to give.

Come on Marco lad, show us how big your balls are starting tonight. I don't want to heap pressure on you but if you can't get those little fluffy rabbit players up for it, they are going to see you down the job centre, over to you boss.

Have a watch of that documentary about Sunderland FC on Netflix.

You might think twice about constantly sacking managers. I know I have.

Chelsea have had 14 changes since 2007 with long term, short term and temporary managers.

Martinez got three seasons. Koeman wasn’t right and we should have appointed a long term manager then instead of Sam. Silva hasn’t gone yet either.
