He was way too passive with the media, which didn't help.
It shouldn't matter, and it's hard to get right, but a manager who can't communicate there is making the job twice as hard.

Stuff like subtly letting the fans know what an absolute circus of a boardroom you're working with. Or standing up to bad officiating - managers who cry at the refs all the time just get memed and tuned out. But calling out an absolute [Poor language removed] travesty of a decision needs to be done, and I don't recall him being very good at that.
