Maradona documentary

During the film there was a brief shot of Maradona's ankle - before the final I think - which had swollen to about double the size of his other ankle. Add to that a toe injury; most players wouldn't even have been on the pitch with injuries like that. It made his 1990 WC performances almost as heroic as his 86 magnificence, for me at least. Heart of a lion.

I also enjoyed this quote, not included in the film, after they'd lost to Cameroon in the opening game:

“The only pleasure I got this afternoon was to discover that, thanks to me, the people of Milan have stopped being racist. Today, for the first time, they supported the Africans.”

I'm half way through it. She has finished for the day so I will watch the rest tomorrow. I loved it right from the cheesy 80's music at the beginning. The worst possible thing he ever could have done was go to Italy and specifically Napoli. The Mafia were on him right away. Superb footballer, the greatest ever. Absolute idiot though.

I'm halfway through it with my son. A bit more of him playing would be great. I am enjoying it a lot.

Just watched it, he was simply the best for me.

He took some serious hits too, but the amount he evaded with skill and speed was in itself an art he also mastered, there's a bit of footage in it against Juve where it stands out.

Read his book El Diego a long time ago and I might dust it off and give it another go after watching this. I found the film, albeit great, could almost be subtitled 'The Napoli Years'.

Great film. He is still a God in Naples and rightly so what he did for that team and the city. The Camorra connection was inevitable as they get their claws into what makes money and power , still happens today

There was too much bending of the stick towards Diego. The refrain throughout was that we should seperate "Diego" from "Maradona"...the latter being a self-created icon to deal with the expectations placed on his shoulders and the demands of the world's media. That's just an excuse to not be a responsible adult. Diego was the greatest player of all time, but he was a man-child.

Overall I felt like the documentary dwelt too much on the non-football issues - especially the years at Napoli. We got virtually no apporeciation of this man's wonderful gift to play football.
You can't separate the two, it'd be like a film about Messi - boring.

Saw it in the cinema and really enjoyed it, but agree with the comments that I would have liked to have seen more of the football. Theres quite a bit of his time at Barca and Napoli on youtube if you look though.

Was also coincidentally reading his autobiography "El Diego" when the film came out.. can defo recommend that if you can get hold of a copy. Hated him for years after the 86 world cup, got over that now though. He was the best for me, apart from the massive cheating :)
