Should vaccines be mandatory in the Premier and other European Leagues

End of the day, you or I aren’t forced into a vaccine, so why should a player?

I chose to be vaccinated because I have elderly relatives, and come into contact with hundreds of people each week, but ultimately if I didn’t, that’s my choice.

Personally, a footballer is being paid a ridiculous amount of money, and, they’re paid to play football. Something which is preventable, if it means they’re missing games or cause mass absentees, which could cost titles or trophies, i feel they should do it, however, it’s not that simple.
People have their own beliefs, opinions and make their decisions. No one should be forced to take a vaccine or not take one, however unpopular that May be.
Not unpopular at all mate, I’d be surprised if that wasn’t the view of most people.

In much the same way as freedom of speech doesn’t equal freedom from consequences, so freedom to choose re the vaccine shouldn’t equal freedom to continue with the privilege of training and playing at an elite level unchecked. As long as players understand that and there is a RIGOROUS testing regime in place then there’s no reason for mandating anything.

unless you work in a hospital or old folks home i don't think the vaccine should be mandated,

surely if say 85% of the squad get double jabbed then that gives herd immunity in case of refusers or people who can't get the jab

That’s very murky waters as they’re contractually obliged to their salary (I’d be surprised if there was anything in their contracts covering this kind of scenario) but not to be able to train/play with the rest of the team.
It’s not really about covering this scenario in a contract, there won’t be anything like that for sure. That doesn’t mean he’s entitled to be paid regardless. If the PL makes having the vaccine a requirement of playing in the prem next season and player refuses to have the vaccine, they will be making themselves unavailable for selection.

Mutual obligation in an employment contract - employer has to pay salary and the employee has to be available to do the work they are being paid to do. If the employee isn’t, then the employer is released from its obligation to pay salary.

It’s his choice but we shouldn’t pay him if it turns out PL do make this a requirement of playing in the PL and he refuses.

Its all academic with him as he’s never fit anyway so…

I'll put it this way: I'm not clear on why "for Premier League players" was appended to the thread title.

As far as I'm concerned, someone that does not get vaccinated by choice is a potential walking bio-weapon. I generally respect the ACLU and its approach, both when I agree with them and when I don't.

I can't respect that thinking on vaccination. I think the public health imperative outweighs freedom of choice, and I don't think it's even a remotely close call.

Good point, though that’s a difficult thing to police effectively in terms of making sure a negative result is delivered before they start training, get on the coach etc, especially allowing for the possibility of false positives etc.

It really is the only available compromise, to my mind, though.
Lateral flow tests though I know not always accurate would be enough.

Im very much pro-vaccine but It should always be personal choice what you insert into one's body.*

Whether an employer still wants to give you money for putting clients or co-workers at risk is also a choice.

*I feel there's a joke involving @Bungle here somewhere

It's selfishness, plain and simple. Hearing heartbreaking stories in the news of people about to be put on a ventilator asking for the vaccine and being told it is too late... healthy adults in their 20's and 30's. People like Delph need to wise up.
It is specially selfish to the healthcare workers that are exhausted, burned out, and are dealing with mental health issues because of the trauma and deaths they have been witnessing for over a year now.
