Think that's where the name came from, think all the local parish priests were fans.
Its a bit deeper than that. Matt Busby was a staunch Catholic (raised in sectarian West Scotland), and his values drove the club.

He was brought to the club by Louis Rocca, their Italian Catholic chief scout. He was also massively influential there.

Busby wanted Man Utd to be driven by family values. Supposedly this was a big attraction to young players from Irish Catholic backgrounds. These included the likes of Liam Whelan and Shay Brennan.

Funnily enough though, George Best came from an orange background in Northern Ireland!

I used to go there a few times a Season when they were in the old second division, compared to Goodison it was like going back in time,a right dump.
In the late-'50s/very early-'60s, When We were playing away, I would watch our reserves at Goodison, then nip out at 3/4 time and go across Stanley Park to watch the last few minutes of a 2nd Division game! I would stand on the Kop. stretch my arms open wide, and be able to spin around and not touch a single person - truth. THAT was the scale of their support when in the 2nd Division. Then a certain Bill Shankly got a grip of them...

The win over West Ham was a real struggle . very laboured and felt sorry for van de beek , he looks drained of confidence but i think the management have undermined him , i dont think OGS actually wanted him it was probably one of parasite glazers who bought him , Most United fans only want one thing that is the parasite glazers to leave our club , good riddance to bad rubbish

With massive investment from a sugar daddy and breaking transfer value records in the process...

Cannot stand United, or “U-Knight-Ed” as their annoying glory supporters call them, but Liverpool will always be the worse of the two.

I would rather Leicester win it since we cannot, but Man City I have a lot of respect for and their supporters I’ve met are a good bunch.

Before we played Sunderland away in 2013-14, I went with my now ex to the Collinery Arms pub outside the ground. We ended up making friends with one of the Mackems and he told us how unlikeable and annoying the United lot were in their supporters pub before and after the game. During the same conversation he said that us Evertonians are the best lot to come to the Stadium of Light and always told his fellow supporters to go to Goodison at least once in their lives.

Ehhhhh

My school was full of glory hunting United fans, very very annoying, I don't think i'll ever like them
Likewise, I had a classmate in years 8, 9, 10 and 11 who was a glory hunting United [Poor language removed]. I bet he’s never been to Manchester once to this very day.

And Fergie cut his teeth at Ibrox. I remember him in the 60s!
In truth I reckon United appeal to both sides of the divide - certainly in Ireland.
