three thumbs down for mild sarcasm at my own expense.. you lot need some Kalms before work

Best example ever of why the Europa League is a waste of space. This injury could cost Spurs the Champions League spot, and they're playing two games in the space of four days, including one against a European rival.

Don't agree here mate.

It's not a waste for me. If it was the traditional UEFA Cup, or Cup Winners Cup, would you feel the same? Great tournaments both.
He could just as easily got injured in training.

Bingo.

I'd love us to be playing in a European quarter final.

I don't rate it in the slightest. Little prestige, poor financial incentive, just clutters the calendar.

If Spurs go on a losing streak which costs them a top four finish you won't find one of their fans talking about the glory of reaching the European Milk Cup Quarter Final.

I think it's got prestige if you win the thing, but up until the QF stage it's just a pain in the arse imo. Sunday KO's, stretching the squad etc. I'm truly not arsed if we qualify for it or not.

I agree as far as prestige goes. But financially there's just no comparison, the CL is far more lucrative for just qualifying than the EL is even if you win it.

There is only one way to close the gap and add more prestige to the Europa, and thats giving the winners a CL spot.
Could you just imagine it, if that was the case now, and Spurs finished 4th, with Newcastle winning the Europa. Haha.

Or reduce the amount of fixtures involved in the EL and increase the prize money.

For example, in 2011 Barcelona received £45m for winning the CL, while Porto only got £7m for winning the EL.

It's shockingly unbalanced.

Somebody on the Spurs forum got it right:

But we are not robots, and we cannot merely live for the future. Sometimes we must seize the present at all costs. Sometimes it works out and its worth it. Sometimes, like tonight, it doesn't quite pay off, and we can be sour. But damnit, we shouldn't be complaining that we tried.

I've been enjoying our time in the Europa League, and as much as I'd prefer to be in the Champions league next season it would be an anti-climax if we didn't try to win this tournament. Its not mickey mouse, not anymore. We've beat good teams to get here, and we'll have to beat better ones to win it. But it is possible, and it is worth it. If not materially, it will be written into history, and written into our hearts.

It would still be nearly 20 years without a trophy if we qualified for the Champions League, but it wouldn't be if we won the Europa.

i agree with tha pal, but thats purely for cash money, rather than prestige. For me, the FA Cup is massively more prestigious than the CL and the EL, but you dont get anywhere near what you recieve for either of them.

The numbers involved do need to be decreased IMO, and it should be the same for the CL, it should be the Europa Cup and the Champions Cup, open to the winners and the runners up of each Euro league, and each leagues domestic cup Winner only. the others, 3rd and 4th, and the Domestic Cup runners up, go into the Europa League. I haven't done any working out as to how many you would have in each competition, but I feel thats what it should be based around. Champions League for finishing fourth? Gizza break.

I'll take it this year though, with both hands.
