They weren't banned as a result of an overspend, they were banned for failing to repay their debts to other clubs, the tax man and employees. Totally different scenario.

Its not totally different - they breached FIFA rules on financial conduct and gained an unfair advantage as a result, just as City and PSG have. The punishment should be the same.

The ban is nothing to do with gaining advantage from financial doping, it's a direct result of unpaid bills to former employees and other clubs. They had a domestic transfer ban in Spain as a result of the same issue. It's not a precedent for a club like us to use against UEFA's chosen punishment for City, simple as.

The difference is they were not paying because they didn't have the money and that rule is therefore to avoid possibly lessening the 'integrity' of the competition if they went bankrupt.
This Rule is about not allowing City to spend more money that they have. It was only brought in to stop wealthy leagues sucking the players out of poor leagues by having huge squads. Platini was behind it to stop French players leaving to play in other countries, ironic that now PSG have a money bags owner they're being hit with it as well.

If it came to banning City, I bet Uefa would jarg a new rule stating the team seeded highest in Europe in the Prem would take their place.
I'm sure from a revenue perspective, they'd love to slip Utd back in the mix.

Uefa don't actually have a say in who qualifies.
They give the Country's Association a number of places derived from all manner of equations.
The National Association then decides who to give the places to. They could in theory give any team the European place but the unfairness of that would be challenged unless they could come up with a valid reason for it. The FA have the rules set out that it's done by final League Position.

No need for us to do any legal challenge. In the highly unlikely event this escalates far enough that they'd get banned from the CL I'd obviously happily have us take their spot.
I read today the 50m fine might also go on their books. Like they've spent another 50m on players/wages which they'd have to also offset ... making things even harder for them. Not sure if true ... as with a lot of FFP stuff it's hard to know what's real.

That is exactly the reason why we have to press the issue. Citeh will be appealing, so its benefits everyone to have both appeals of this case tried together. At worst UEFA is obliged to fight on our side.

I'm sure Arsenal would be better suited to complain as City's ouster from the CL means Arsenal get a group stage place. We should just keep schtum and if Arsenal presses their case and succeeds, we'd simply inherit the Gunners' place without having opened our yaps, thereby maintaining a dignity throughout the proceedings.

I still think of the PL as the "First Division" and still refer to it as such, because despite the sponsorship money, nobody ever paid me to change my language! This is one area where I admired the newcastle fans - just like we would, I hope, if they tried to rename Goodison Park, they rightly made a right fuss at the loss of the name "St James' Park."
A rose by any other name is still a rose.
But my point was why do we simply allow these bits of cultural folk-law and identity to be stolen from us? The name "Champions League" is misleading to say the least, and the EU hate all things to do with misleading advertising - eg it's Cornish "style" pasties, unless they're from Cornwall.

I've never known the Champions League to be anything other than what it is and I like the style of the tournament. Would hate for it to be just the league winners.
