Just finished watching this and whether you believe Steven Avery is guilty or not, he obviously didn't get a fair trial. As for Brendan Dassey, a 16 year old with very low intelligence, he was clearly coerced into saying whatever he thought the police and that dodgy "defence" investigator wanted him to say. Anyone with any common sense watching those interviews could see that. The fact that he was allowed to be interviewed without a lawyer present, or even a parent, was very disturbing and wouldn't have been allowed in the UK. Even Fred West had an appropriate adult present during police questioning!
The Wisconsin Supreme Court then refused to even look at either case. One can only assume that was because of the fallout that would ensue if they were found not guilty.
Even if the police didn't set out to deliberately frame Avery, they made up their minds very early who they thought was responsible, didn't explore any other lines of investigation, and did whatever they thought was necessary to ensure a conviction.
What's even more disturbing is that the Avery and Dassey cases are almost certainly just the tip of the iceberg, and so many other people aren't getting a fair trial. It appears to be common practice that police/sheriffs departments use their instincts to decide who the culprit is, and then devote all their energies to shaping the facts to reinforce their assumption, rather than using the facts to lead them to the perpetrator. The appeals courts are then reluctant to address any miscarriages of justice because it doesn't reflect well on the justice system.
