Lumping it forward

Or try to run around 5 Arsenal players in your own 6 yard box like Mirallas tried and nearly gave the ball (and a penalty) away. Sometimes you gotta get rid.

it CAN be effective but the way the team implements it, it really isn't very often. they usually lump it up to a player who is by themselves or, if there is more than one up top, the flick on is usually nowhere near them. I just really don't see it effective for the team the vast majority of the time. It's like what the team does during kick off, back to jags, lumped to nobody, lose possession.

Am I the only one here willing to acknowledge that 'lumping it forward' can be effective?

It can... Like against Fulham but that's because it was Fellaini v Hughes(?) but it was Anichebe v Mertersacker who has a good 3 inches on him, and Anichebe isn't great with his head or chest, better with the ball coming into his feet. He's also a lot more experienced and smarter so that plan (if it was, seemed like it was) was always going to be hard to execute.

We didn't even do it for the sake of it either, I don't quite understand the OP, we played a lot of nice footy today.

Tim Howard and Jags are the worst offenders, some of those balls they hoof forward are a bit aimless. Always been a fan of the goalie rolling it out to a full back and getting the passes going, seems silly to give the ball always so cheaply.

Jagielka is a right swine for it. Whilst Heitinga has been poor defensively, he at least likes to play it out from the back.

If fellaini were played up front, this would have been more effective. as it was, he probably saved us a couple of goals played as deep as he was. more than he would've created. this can't be our main tactic for the rest of the season, but the result is a draw. we still have positions to play for.

I don't think we can realistically expect to hold 60% possession at the Emirates. I think the high press that we put on was the right way to play that game.

Sometimes its OK to keep the defense on its toes. Against Spurs we probably should have done it a few more times because Vic was giving them fits.

There's nothing wrong with the occasional hoof or mixing it up a bit.
I think at the start of the season we had the mix perfect. It seemed once mirallas and Gibson got injured and our form dipped a little we started to do it too much.

Get the mix right and apply it in the right games and its a valuable weapon. Use it wrong and too much it's just hoof ball.
