Bundesliga: Beckenbauer on Podolski | Setanta

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has now admitted that the club could be ready to sell Lukas Podolski – but says he will cost €15 million.
The 23-year-old Germany striker has told the club he wants to leave in January after failing to establish himself in the first-team, and former club Cologne, who have first option on the striker, have repeatedly stressed their desire to sign the player.
Podolski has also been strongly linked with Manchester City, Everton and Tottenham, but Bayern boss Jurgen Klinsmann this week appeared to rule out a move when he said: "We want to have four strikers in our squad next year – one of which is Lukas Podolski."
However, Beckenbauer has revealed the club could be tempted to sell at the right price as the player does not fit into the Bayern system.
“Everything in life has its price,” he told Bild.
“Two and a half years ago, we paid €10m (£8.4m). Now, the fee is €15m (£13m).
“You cannot keep a professional if he is unhappy, on the bench and not playing.
“Poldi does not quite fit into our way of playing. He is a top-class striker when he has space in front of him as he has the pace to run clear.
“But the teams we play against are usually very defensive, so we need players who can get into the penalty area – Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni in particular.”

We can dream...

What a signing he would be.

He would be an amazing signing, hes a fantastic player. But we couldnt afford him even if Kenwright won the lottery on saturday.

i think it's pretty certain that anyone of his quality will be courted by citeh, they can basically buy whoever they feel like now, they can just march in with the wedge.
we are more likely to sign players who moyes believes will BECOME fantastic players. lets not approach this window thinking we are gonna go out and sign Podolski, Moutinio and Dion Dublin, it will only lead to angst and heartbreak.

Yeah he would be an awesome signing. Won't happen though.

We don't have any money and we don't need another striker.

Of course we could sell Yakubu but we're not allowed to do that ever.

Even if Yak does go to Spurs and we get a decent wedge for him i really can't see Podolski coming here unfortunatly. No matter how much we bid for him.

that quote that kills that off is Franz Beckenbauer saying "you cannot keep a professional if he is unhappy"

so moving from bayern munich to everton will make him happy?

i think 70k+ is the only thing that will make his agent *ahem..sorry, him* happy.

There's also a lot of talk him re-joining FC Cologne. He started his career there and is absolutely idolised over there. If Everton wanted him, I'm not to sure Podolski would say no. but same as for Vagner Love, we do have more urgent positions that require to be looked at, than the striking department. He can play as a left-winger though. Would definately like to have him, but don't believe this rumour to be true.

Id have an embelasm if we blew wedge on a striker, midfeild priority 1 and has been for the past ten seasons.

Having said that bet we sign a centre half or another left back.

EVERTON have started moves to bring Lukas Podolski to Goodison Park.

David Moyes has been monitoring Podolski’s situation since Euro 2008 amid whispers that he is unhappy at Bayern Munich.

Podolski, 23, has confirmed he will be leaving the German giants by handing in a transfer request.

That has alerted a string of Premier League clubs — but it is Everton who plan to be first out of the traps.

Boss Moyes suggested last week that he will have little or no money to spend in the transfer window. But he is concerned about his striking options and the club are considering ways of raising the finance.

Podolski would not come cheap — but in the current climate, he is unlikely to be over- priced, either. A bid of just under £10million should be sufficient.

Knife

Moyes insists he will NOT sell to raise funds. But he may be forced to reassess the situation as problems mount up front.

New boy Louis Saha complained of a hamstring problem after the defeat at Wigan and James Vaughan, whose career has been plagued by injury, is going under the knife again.

Moyes’ main asset, Yakubu, has had an indifferent start to the season.

Despite being a success at the European Championships — the Polish-born striker scored three times — Podolski has not been a regular at the Allianz Arena.

Spurs were interested in him but Harry Redknapp’s priorities now lie elsewhere.

Manchester City have checked out Podolski but their transfer window targets are expected to be even more ambitious.

Fantastic

Moyes, meanwhile, believes that homegrown coaches are finally starting to get their chance.

He said: “Tony Adams, Roy Keane, Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Gareth Southgate and Paul Ince are the signs that this is happening.

“Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have been fantastic for football in this country but other big names have come here and it hasn’t worked for them.

“But Harry Redknapp’s impact at Spurs will give a lot of chairmen reason to think going abroad isn’t always the answer.”
