But if Romelu receives those assurances, he'd be bonkers to believe them. If we spend £20m on Lukaku we will have very little left to spend on other players - in fact I bet anyone else we recruit would be on loan / free transfer only. It would be massively unwise to simply blow every extra penny we've accrued this year on transfers, because that would simply take us back to an existence that revolves around the balance sheet, and dodging the bank's phone calls.
As for the top three challenge.... City and Chelsea will buy big again this year, and Arsenal will only be slightly off their financial pace (no doubt crying crocodile tears about being poverty stricken, as per usual) and Liverpool will spend like a tattooed chav lottery winner. United will spend AND don't have the distraction of European competition so their prem squad will be fresh and well-rested compared to others at key parts of the season. 4th place is going to be tougher to get next season than it was this year and, as much as I would like to see it, a top three challenge is not happening. There are well over a dozen clubs in the prem with more financial strength than us.
