Its not about splashing the cash really. I think alot of people would like to see Rom signed up even if it meant him + 4 loan signinga and barry on a free.
Lets say we signed 3 players such as Michy, Martins-Indi and Banega for example. Yes the squad would be stronger but would we be weaker overall? Who knows.
The key for me in
moyes tenure was when he said we had a good side but needed that X factor player to make the magic happen. He then went for Moutinho and didnt get him as Porto wanted too much up front. I think though it shows you do need to make one or two players with the X Factor to really take the team to the next level.
I firmly believe that with Stones/McCarthy/Barkley we have the potential spine of league champions and feel that if we signed Lukaku it wouldnt just be his ability (now or in future) resale value or anything else I would really be looking at. I think the main reason to sign him is that he is around the same age as 3 other top talents we have and would make the sum of all parts even stronger than if we signed another player instead.
He obviously loves martinez and with those other 3 there of similar age he can actually grow with them over the next decade. This could be a similar effect to man utd had before with all their youngsters as we also have a few of our own coming through too.
By signing Lukaku we not only create a focal point in attack for potentially a decade but also possibly the first wave of youngsters before the kids like ledson come through.
For me signing him has endless possibilities.
Don't think it gets you to a glass ceiling at all - it's just smart business. If you start splashing the cash all over the place on the flavour of the month when you're a club of our size and make-up then you end up like Leeds.
There aren't any that I'd rather sign than Lukaku at his age, but then Lukaku is apparently rated at £20m, so it's a moot point. Batshuayi is £8m but a substantially bigger risk in terms of quality, but that would allow you to then have a go at Martins Indi, have cash to fund a possible Traore loan extension, maybe bring in a defensive midfielder to sure up an area of the pitch we lack depth etc.
If we had a £60m transfer budget, I'd be all for taking the risk on a few extra million quid on Lukaku. But we don't.
