Transfer Rumour Luis Diaz

You could argue that the £10m per year that James is costing us could have been redirected to an athletic right back. In fact I'd probably argue that the "useless" tag is deserved more for the decision to agree £200k per week contracts when we are already aware from painful experience of how difficult it is to shift players who earn that sort of money.

In any case, given this is the Diaz thread, I suspect that even if he isn't the player James is (I've seen nobody with the natural talent that James has in a blue shirt in my living memory - I'm 40), there's more value to be had in this sort of signing. Doesn't look like it's happening though :-/
He's had three years to bring one in, when we have needed one for that much time, to help Coleman and succeed him.

He has brought in Sidibe on loan, loaned out Kenny, we refused to sell him in January instead to just loan him out again for a nominal fee.

We have in that time also handed Gomes £120k a week, Delph close to 100k, Iwobi 70k after chasing Zaha who was in no way similar, Bernard 120k.

So come on, there is no excuse.

Yes it is the Diaz thread. However, any hope of the deal surely relies on sending James out. Which is fine. I just think it's fair to compare and not having this revisionism that he was crap or is the cause of our issues. The cause of our issues is widespread and he is currently one of them, but he also happens to be a very good player.

I like Diaz mate but I'm not sure he can be classed as that yet.

He'd be a gamble.

And people say James was a let down. Well if we got Diaz and he scored/assisted 14 goals next season we'd be buzzing. But that deal could cost us 30m plus paying a big chunk of James' wage?

Obviously now it’s emerged that he won’t leave us, it’s all a mute point anyway.

But I think that’s part of the part of developing a player, he’s already a great talent he can easily push on and be better, would assumably command a wage less than a all the castoffs we’ve had this season and less than £4m for James wouldn’t kill us, considering the rumours he’s on £200k, that plus Días would probably have been less.

No arguments there

And yes, the right back position has been an issue for 2 to 3 years.

I sort of understood the decision to loan Sidibe and loan out Kenny - at that point we weren't sure how Kenny would progress and a season in Germany seemed a good idea. It became abundantly clear last season that Kenny wasn't going to be the required level though and so I 100% agree that right back should have been priority number one this summer, but at the same time that has coincided with the financial restraints, so I don't think it's quite as cut and dried as that, but still - if we had budget available, I'd have been spending it on a right back rather than the two wingers we bought. That said, perhaps Benitez disagreed and tbf to him, our start does tend to suggest he was right and I'd have been wrong.

My main thing was the whole playing James to play for someone else thing mate. A tiny cut, alright, but anything above 15% and it's taking the biscuit imo.

I think they'll still be working on it. There's no way we can afford what Porto want so the only option is to include James it seems

I read the bit about him on £200k per week and question the sanity of the whole saga.
