Apart from any other issue I am genuinely surprised that there was so little interest in Digne.
Competition from clubs would be the main factor in determining the fee and Newcastle and Villa seemed to be the only two clubs interested.

It would appear that he is not as highly regarded as we thought he was.

Your argument only stacks up inside your own head Dave. Selling our best players like Lucas Digne will only make Everton a worse side. Selling them to our peers like Aston Villa will only make them a better side than us. Selling them to that #@#@ Gerrard, actually makes me ill.

In terms of general concept of selling an older (not finished) player to get younger ones in, I'm on board with that.

How it's come about and the handling of it, with Everton in no position to bargain, midway through the season when we're in genuine danger of going down, is not good.

Second-most creative full-back in the league (and unlike you and your dinosaur mate, most people realise full-backs are now crucial to attacks, and that it's the job of a three-man midfield to support the defence and enable full-backs to get forward (they still have to defend but attacking is just as crucial now)) since he joined, on a long-term deal and in the peak of his career with tons of international and PL and CL experience etc.

His value, if not selling in these circumstances, is way above £22-23m which is what we're getting. We've just paid £17m for a lad from Kyiv and £11m for a lad with 27 senior apps.

Trippier is three years older than Digne.

Absolute tosh arguing that a ferret like Digne is worth a lot more than twice what Trippier is worth.

Chelsea were interested but wouldn't ever offer Everton a fee. Other than that the top clubs all have two LBs already and don't tend do businesses in the middle of the season.

No clubs abroad can afford him or his wages right now in the middle of the season.

That leaves the likes of Villa, West Ham and Leicester really. Newcastle only enquired because they're super rich.

Had Digne gone in the summer, there'd have been a lot more interest.

Napoli and Inter could only offer loan deals.

Trippier is 3 years older than Digne, that's all. Digne is a better attacker, Trippier a better defender.

Digne's market value will be about £30m if Everton didn't want to/need to sell. We're getting £22-23m plus add ons. It's not awful, but it puts into perspective what we've paid for Mykolenko and Patterson too.
 
No ill will towards the guy, hope he does ok at Villa. Quite glad he's gone though, and for a good price.

For an attacking full back, he can't beat anybody for pace or with skill, so that leaves him being good at crossing and surprisingly good in the air, which makes him about as attacking as a Burnley full back.

Thats a hell of a lot of excuses for him. Im pretty sure if he was that good then clubs would have got the nod to him that they would be in for him in the summer.
You know. And whisper it. There is just a possibility aston villa was the best he was getting.

Wouldn't be many clubs looking to pay £30mill for a left back in January regardless of quality IMO. Especially when we would only deal with perm moves.

Chelsea, Inter, Napoli, Atletico were all rumoured to be interested but all loans. Newcastle and Villa were the only ones willing to pay. He didn't want Newcastle.
 
If Digne was better than what the top clubs have, the top clubs would be all over him. If Kylian Mbappe was on the market tomorrow, every club in the world would be after him - and Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world - would sign him. Digne will, it seems, move to the club highest in the food chain that wants him. Right now, that appears to be Aston Villa.

'If he was good' - have you not watched us for the last three and a half years???

Yeah, right now, Villa clearly the best he could get after Chelsea who wouldn't even entertain offering money Everton wanted because they were trying to get Emerson back. I thought they would go for it but they do have three LBs on their books.

If you think any European team is currently in a position to lump £25m at Everton then you honestly need to realise how dire the financial situation is for a lot of those clubs.

What top six club other than Chelsea currently needs a LB?

City have Cancelo, Zinchenko and Ake (they are also still paying Mendy)
Arsenal have Tierney and Taveres
Liverpool have Robertson and Tsimikas
Man Utd have Shaw and Telles
Spurs have Reguillon and Davies

This isn't about excuses. He's gone where the manager wants him and Villa are an ambitious club that want to push on. He's a very good player and he's going to play games in a WC year. He was happy at Everton up until the walking disaster came in, but given our financial situation it's good to sell a 28-year-old and reinvest the money as we have done. But we didn't help ourselves with how it was handled.

Well that's it.

He's good enough for Chelsea, but they have 3 LBs on their books - one of whom is on loan at Lyon and they're trying to get back. Chelsea were never going to offer money Everton wanted when they only need a LB because Chilwell is out for the season. He'll be back in the summer and they have Alonso. It's basically a back-up they need and they wouldn't offer Everton £25m or whatever it is for that.

Digne is better than a few of the options at the top clubs but that doesn't mean they go and get him.

He's not better than Cancelo, he's about on the same level as Shaw and Telles but Man Utd aren't getting rid of Shaw or Telles. He's better than Tierney but he's a 24/25-year-old and Arsenal signed Tavares as his back-up. Spurs have Reguillon and then Davies as his rotation option, and Sessegnon too. Digne's as good or better than all of them but again, why would Spurs look to move those on in the middle of the season? We wouldn't sell to Liverpool and they have two LBs. No club abroad could have afforded the fee that we wanted and, credit to the club, it seems they absolutely did not want to loan him out.

He'll score against us when he comes to Goodison next week.
